RE: Volfy...pics of slits
Volfy: Are you still running the glow Ryobi engines? What is the best fuel mix? Is 0-5% nitro working good. I bet you have to be carefull of kickback. Back bounce starting may work? best regards Capt,n

RE: Ryobi 31cc glow conversion
Boy, I completely forgot about this thread. Sorry.
I ended up selling the one in the picture above here on RCU. I still have two other Ryobi 31cc waiting for conversion - one brand new twin-ring, one old used single-ring. Too many conversion engines waiting their turn. When I get around to do a PT-19 or a Ryan STA or some other long narrow cowl airplane, I'll call up one of the Ryobi 31cc's for sure. As for fuel, 5% castor seems to be plenty. I'm sure syn blend would work too, but I would up it to maybe 7% instead. These low CR weedies likes a bit of nitro. It runs great on 15% nitro, but it looses quite a bit of power with less than 3%. I started with 0% and spiked it up to 5% bit by bit - all ran find, but transition definitely sweenten up noticeably around 3%. If I don't need to wring it out, that's what I'd run. I used a cheapo Tower glow plug and it worked great. I'm sure an OS "F" or Fox Miracle plug would work even better. Kick back was never a problem for me, again because of the low CR. If I really had some time, I would get rid of the cyl gasket and RTV it to raise CR, then trim the intake port a little to compensate. I'm sure it will pick up a few 100rpms and run better on low nitro. |

Volfy: I have some Byrons syn/castor fuel. It Is 10% nitro and 16% oil. I am not a math wiz...so about how much strait alky do I have to mix in to get close to that 3-5% nitro you use. Seems like 1 gal Byrons to 1 gal strait alky would give 5% nitro and 8% oil. But things are not always what it appears. Thanks for the interesting advice you have already posted. Regards Capt,n

RE: Ryobi 31cc glow conversion
RCIGN1 Have you ever ran a G38 with the WT499 carb using glow only? I would be very interested what rpm you got. Also what nitro content was the fuel? Thanks Capt,n

Just cut it 50/50 with methanol. You might end up with something like 4% nitro and 7% oil, but I doubt the Ryobi can tell the difference. You can spike it with more nitro after you've run the engine a bit and decide to try more. In case your Ryobi is brand spanking new, I would run it with the Byron fuel as is for a few tanks before cutting it down. |
RE: Ryobi 31cc glow conversion
Volfy,
If you don't mind telling me, where do you get your methanol here in Houston? Thanks, Will Varnado |
RE: Ryobi 31cc glow conversion
Good idea, Captin...Never tried a G38 set up that way, maybe when I get my WT499s I'll screw a glow plug in one and see what happens, should be interesting....[8D]

RE: Ryobi 31cc glow conversion
MY G38 has the steel 6 hole hub...heavy flywheel and the coil itself is big and heavy. It runs nice...just to heavy for my Midwest G202. With all that dead weight gone and some extra HP , the G38 may work! Let me/us know when you run yours on Glow! Thanks Capt,n

RE: Ryobi 31cc glow conversion
As far as fuel delivery goes, WT-499 definitely had enough needle adjustment to keep up with the Ryobi 31cc, and probably a 38cc too. However, WT-499 has an 11.11mm venturi, which may be a bit on the small side for a 38cc glow engine. My guess is that it will work just fine for the G-38 and will have excellent throttle response, but WOT power might not be as great as with a slightly larger venturi carb.

RCIGN1: How long has the WT-499 carb been in production? Can a person find one on a dead piece of power equipment? Thanks Capt,n

RE: Ryobi 31cc glow conversion
It is my understanding that the "slits" in the cylinder wall is to allow "OLD" guys like me to start the RYOBI in its intended original use, that being a weed whip. It is also believed that it may allow additional oxygen into the engine to reduce polution. I have several of the slotted blocks, and thought about plugging the slits, or set them for running, but to date I have enough blocks without slots to keep me busy for awhile. If I decide to run one, I will post the reasults on this site. FLATHEAD 4

RE: Volfy...pics of slits
My brother is running one of the Ryobis with the slits in the cylinder. It has a stock carb "massaged" slightly larger, and a free flowing muffler. No other mods. It turns an APC 18 x 6 at 7600 rpms consistently. I was rather surprised at how well it runs.
