Engine rotation direction

I have a quick question, I was given a couple of chain saw engines already out of the saw cases. So, my question is, would the direction of the fins on the flywheel indicate the direction of rotation?

RE: Engine rotation direction

chainsaw engines usually turn counterclockwise from the flywheel side, and the clutch side will be turning clockwise if you're looking at the clutch. this means you're going to want to drive the prop from the flywheel side if you are going to use the stock magneto ignition, if you're using electric ignition or gas/glow you can use either end, the engine doesn't care which way it spins, just make sure you use right hand threads on the prop adapter, which means you might have to convert left hand threads to right hand (the saw I'm converting at the moment had left hand threads on both ends...). other than that, have fun

oh, and if you need to convert left hand threads to right hand, it's relatively easy to chuck the crankshaft in a lathe (my 7x10 mini lathe was sufficient for mine), part off the left hand threads, drill and tap the crankshaft for whatever size stud you want to run and just install a stud of the desired size, it's somewhat easier than other alternatives
