Thanks everyone for the help! There is something truely exciting about using creativity and skills to achieve a goal while saving money as well. It adds a whole different dimension to an already exciting hobby. I will dive in to my first conversion while waiting for the monster bird to arrive at my domicile.

Does anyone know the displacement of the echo 3800 weedwhacker? I am just getting into conversions and picked up 3 old echo 3800's for $4 a piece.

unlike stihl echo doesn't dick around with meaningless numbers, 3800 would mean 38cc or 38.something cc.
and at 38cc i imagine this engine is from one of their professional brush-cutters so it should be a good candidate for a conversion.

The Echo 3800 is from a older brush-cutter. I have one and it is a strong engine. Using the magneto ignition wasn't an option since the coil mount was not on the cylinder. I am running it with a CH syncrospark.

The cylinder base flange has a 38 marked on it. However when I measured the bore (3.78cm) and stroke( (3.15cm) I calculate it at 35.7cc, not 38. Irregardless, it is a good engine. I haven't tried a lot of different props, but it turns a 20 X 8 MA semitar at about 7400.

I have an Echo BP2000 and I would like to know if this is a good candidate for a conversion. I would asume that it is about 20cc's

Hi,

This is probably a 21.2cc engine. You can look it up to be sure on the Echo website. The Echo/Kioritz engines are good candidates for conversions. A 23.6cc engine out of a PB-2400 blower, especially an older one would be better, or a 25cc perhaps, but the 21.2cc engine will work. The Echo/Kioritz engines are a better quality engine, and have good power and light weight. This engine would work well in a floater airplane like a Cub, or an aerobatic plane if you don't want 3D performance. Something in the 1000 square inch wing area size, weighing no more than 10 lbs., preferably less for good aerobatic performance. Do some searching around in these threads and you'll find more info on this engine. At 4200' and nearly 100 degrees, my 23.6cc engine (modified), will haul a 10 lb. airplane vertical for several hundred feet doing rolls, and almost hover. (It might actually hover if my flying skills were better and I didn't keep falling out of the hover.) Don't expect quite this performance out of the 21.2cc engine, but that's a little bit of a bench mark for you.

Hi,

I'm using a Futaba 6XAS FM PPM. I keep the radio gear as far as possible from the ignition gear, and use a resistor plug. No problems to date. This is my first computer radio, and man do I love it!

Another weedie retired to hobbyland....
This was a used 21.2cc, twin ring piston version that 'Glo-Bee said several times' was turning the weedie output hub 9000, no load, before disassembly. The prop 'revolver' washer will function as a spinner, upsized the carb to WA-167 and bored and wormed the spacer to .55" (trimmed its waist abit); and a totally open exhaust deflector.

I was hoping for 1 kg (2.2lbs) but haven't quite made it yet. (Still got the idle screw and spring to offload) Still on the lookout for the right sized inhaler to fashion rear seal replacement cap.

The clerk sure looked curious when I ask her to put it on the scale. (The scale is in kilos not lbs)

Now to set the timing and see what a "KILO plus" will turn.

I ran your number through also.

Pick a model that is the same to a point.

Such as SRM 3801 could be close to srm-380 or scm-3800
There are usualy suttle differences but the same size engine.

I believe your engine was a 38cc string trimmer.

Sometimes close counts.

It just looks too small to be a 38 cc. I am going to disassemble it for cleaning and i will then be able to measure the bore and stroke. Who is making the front shaft with the magnetic pickup for the Echo kioritz engines

This hub goes on in front of the flywheel.

For EI you cut the center out of the flywheel with a hole saw.

There are others, but we have made a few of our own and I bought one of these
for a 33cc Echo. The plane needed the nose weight so I left the flywheel on.

I have a Craftsman weed wacker that has what I believe to be an Echo engine.

It has a single ring, and has 2 FGJ-141 and 5500 stamped on the front and rear of the cylinder mounting bosses. The craftsman book says it's 22.5cc and conforms to 1995- 1998 california emmission regs which I'm guessing means that it has the smaller transfer ports. Does anyone have any pics of these ports? Also it has a WYL carb which further makes me believe this. Ive read that you can access the low speed needle by removing the glue but mine seems to have a brass plug in the way. I've included this in the pics for any advice. I'm not looking for a barn burner just something to fly a Cub or similar plane in a scale like manner.

I started it last week and it fired up on the third pull and ran like new, even after it's sat for 6 months. This is going to be fun.[sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif]

Denningpat,heres what the echo "E" looks like.its on the base of the cylinder under the exhaust.It should also be on the back of the case somwhere around the pull start housing.most echos have 2 rings but not all.The one in the pic is a 16 or 18cc but only has one ring but it still has the E even though its old.If yours doesnt have the E i think it might be a shindaiwa or a mc'cullah.It really doesnt matter if your not going to do 3D anywway.It will more than likly fly any high wing airplane with at least 1000 sq inches of wing area in the 72-80 inch size very scale like.Youll get excellent fuel savings from glow and youll be able to use about an 6-8 oz tank.Im planning on putting my echo 17cc or my 23.6cc on my spook.(96)ws.1344 sq in wa.only weighs about 7.5 lbs empty.

mikenlapaz -- Don't know if you are still playing with the Echo that you were trying to get as light as possible. I'm not sure why I didn't post this before..... What you can do if you want to take the engine apart, is cut off the rear part of the crankshaft, allowing just enough to go into the rear bearing properly. Then instead of leaving the seal and trying to find something to block it off, (which could possibly come out later and cause problems), take the seal out. Then cut a round piece of aluminum sheet the same diameter as the seal, (.025" thick would be fine), and JB Weld it into the seal recess. Just make sure the plate and JB Weld seal well all the way around to prevent secondary compression air leaks.

I have done this on all of my Echos.

Frank Bowman has pretty well set the standard in high performance rings.

Some how they are much better than factory rings and are about the same money.
