new stihl blower conversion

I know the blowers dont put out as good as the saws but I think I might have a winner as far as ease of conversions go, 56cc I think I can get her around 3.25 lbs which is the weight of the bme 50 so we will see.I will fire it up over the weekend and post some #s

Well I could not wait so I slapped a prop adapter on and mounted her and got 7600 on a 22x8 pro zinger and 6800 on a menz 22x10 so I am happy with that but can I cut enough weight to make it viable for an aircraft, for those of you who can get ahold of one of these motors it is trully the most smoothest running engine I have done yet.
I will post some more pics. when she is done. Darin |

Sounds great to me! My G62 on ignition will only turn 7200 with a Zinger 22X10! Looks like you've got a keeper there.

bdtsr is it the pro zinger or the square tip I know the square tip loads a little more.do you know what kind of static thrust I would be looking at.mine is the pro zinger

It's a regular Zinger on my G62. According to ThrustHP, with a 22X10 MenzS, you'd have 31.5lbs of thrust. Not too shaby at all!

I have that calculator to but how acurate is it??

if it really would put out 31 lbs then I would put it in a 19 lb. plane, what do you have the g62 in and how much does it weigh?

My G62 is in a Giant Stinger @ 22lbs. Not light by any means. It will hover at about 1/2 power. I would say ThrustHP is pretty close. I have'nt done any actual measurements to verify it though.

Sounds like the thought that blowers don't produce good power only applies to the small consumer models. These big commercial engines should be able to match (or come close to) any chainsaw. I have an echo 58cc blower motor waiting for conversion. hope to get some good numbers from it in stock condition.

new stihl blower conversion
that is what I did I ran it without changing a thing I could put it back into a blower if I wanted but since I got some decent #s I will go ahead and finish it up,it sure is nice to know what it will do before going through the process.
did you know the bme 3.5 that runs circles around a g62 is made from that engine you have a real winner on your hands. Darin |

Good to hear. By the way, what size carb does your Stihl blower have on it? I need a carb for my echo. I'm guessing it should be about a 15 or 16mm venturi?

Some data from an earlier thread of mine:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...ght=mikenlapaz How do you determine (ID) sizes on carbs? ID next to needle valves HD 2B from Walbro: [QU STIHL Blower/Sprayer Carburetor HD-2-1 Description Part # Part Name HD-2-1 OTE] STIHL Blower/Sprayer[/QUOTE] Venturi 15.08 ] |

hi mike, 38 is the venturi diameter in 64ths" all walbros i've seen are marked like this.

You can go to Walbro.com and look up the carb# (WT,WA etc.). The parts breakdown will give the venturi size in mm.

RE: new stihl blower conversion
Hey Darin
Do have any more pics of the Stihl? I happen to have the same engine that i'm converting for my Giant Stinger. Seems we're the only two guys trying to convert one of these things! |
RE: new stihl blower conversion
I have had a BR 400 Stihl blower (57 cc) on a 33 to 35 lb ‘Big Ugly’ airplane (96” Stick mostly plywood) for at least 8 years. The pull start weighs 7 oz. I like it and left it on the engine.
If needed my notes will have prop and RPM numbers. It’s a good engine. |
RE: new stihl blower conversion
More.
The prop information was somewhat sketchy but latest appears first. From memory I think the last series of flights were on 22-8 and 22-10 Dynathrust props and I settled on 22-8 as best all around. 22-10 Dynathrust 6900-7000 22-10 APC 7300-7400 22-10 Dynathrust 6700 22-6 Dynathrust ??? The engine needs an air filter or velocity stack or air box. Shine the car headlights on a running engine at night and you can see a pulsating halo at the carb entrance. It looks like a donut shaped smoke ring. In the air stream a significant amount of fuel mixture would be lost. On whatever prop that was being used at the time an air door raised the RPM from 8600 to 8800. |
