I have a Ryobi 31cc with a stock carb mounted on the front of my Ultra Stick 120. My needle settings are as follows:
Low: about 7/8 turn out High: about 1/2 turn out I have a Master Airscrew 16-8 (square tips) and I'm getting: Top end: 7800 rpm Idle: 2100 rpm It's a fairly new engine, so it hasn't fully broken in yet. When it does, I'm sure the idle will go down a bit. Do these settings sound right? What are you guys getting on your Ryobi's? What prop works best with an Ultra Stick 120? Thanks for the help... |

Incidentally, the Ryobi was a swap-out with a G-23 that was on the US120 before. I still have the G-23, and it's looking for a home, but will I see any improvemnent in performance with the Ryobi? What are your experiences?

I also have a question to add. What is the glow equivalent to the Ryobi 31cc gas engine?
Just trying to get an idea of how much power the Ryobi has. Thanks for any help. |
ryobi 31cc
hi,
i don`t know what glow engine has the same amount of power as it but i know 31 cc`s is equal to 1.80. i would think a 120 2 stroke would be equal or probably more. a 150 or 180 4 stroke might be the same power? i have a ryobi i`m going to put on a 1/4 scale decathlon, i hope it will pull it around good. i`ll need to put a c&h ignition on it because the flywheel won`t fit under the cowl. i don`t know if rc ignitions has one to fit it or not. conk |

I'm getting 7000-7100 with an 18-6 Zinger on my new Ryobi conversion. It was not run any as a trimmer, and is still loosening up the more I run it. I'm running the stock carb and muffler still. My conversion parts came from Paragon Engineering, and I'm very happy with them.
Sorry, but I haven't tried a 16-inch prop. From most of what I've read, the Ryobi likes to be propped for around 7000-7200. With the stamped-steel conrod, most folks suggest keeping RPM under 8000. |

Hey BalsaO; What does that combo weigh??? The Ultra Stick with the Ryobi. It sure looks good together.

Thanks for the compliment! I got the all-white version, and my wife picked out the colors! White all over with neon green , navy blue, and chrome accents. Checkerboards on bottom are all navy blue. It weighs right at 13 lbs. I hope it'll scoot better than it did with the G-23. Probably going to fly it next weekend, if the weather's nice. I might try a few different props to see what it'll do. The 16-8 Master was the G-23 prop, but I'll try it first for comparison. I have a 18-8 APC one piece prop, an APC 18-10 2 piece prop-hub assembly, and a Zinger 18-8 wood prop. That should give me a range of rpm readings... |

If you haven't already done a "ryobi" general search, it would be informative to say the least. Also you can see some tach numbers for Ryobis in the Tachometer Readings forum. Most experienced Ryobi flyers say that a 16" prop is too small. I think you need at least an 18" prop to load the engine down to the high 6000 to low 7000 rpm range. My best rpm for pulling power (thrust) so far is about 7300 with a Master Airscrew Classic 18x8. I'm at about 1-1/4 turn out on both low and high speed needles. With an 18" prop I think you will have to richen it a little from 7/8 turn.
You should get more thrust and more top speed with an APC 18x10. I'm sure an all forum search will be helpful in selecting a prop. Good Luck, and let everyone know how the US120 flies when you get it sorted out. |
Ryobi questions...
I have a ryobi converted and I get 7200 rpms with a 18X6 APC.
This combo pulls about 12 1/2lbs of Static thrust. This engine sure is a nice engine to convert but is not all that powerful. I also converted a poulan 46cc chainsaw, lots more power!!!! I think the Ryobi will fly your plane fine, but I don't know if it will be real strong. I have one mounted on a Sig Astro Hog, hope to fly it in the next couple of days. Let us know how yours performs. |
Ryobi questions...
Very nice!
have sistership in the works. Where is your CG? Did you have to add any weight aft? Did you use modify the throttle linkage connections? Any renforcement on aft of firewall? Got any pics of the remote engine kill / servo set-up? I have 1600mAh batteries, RX and switch/charge port mounted just forward of your rudder servo. Plan to mount tank (18 oz) with its C/L just aft of leading edge. |

MikeLapaz:
My CG is where the plans called for, I don't know the distance off the top of my head? I can measure it if you don't have the plans. I sheeted and glassed my Hog, So I was 1 1/2lbs tail heavy with a tower.61 up front. I had to add 5oz. to the tail with the ryobi mounted. The ryobi really makes the nose of the plane long. If I like the way the plane flys with the ryobi I will move the firewall back about an 1 1/2". I rotated the carb on the ryobi so that the control arm and jets are on top. I cut the slab sides off of the nose and made a bolt-on firewall. I made a cowl from the bottom of a fuel jug. Looks better then it sounds. My Hog weighs 11 1/2lbs ready to fly. Heavy!!!!! I did not use a servo controlled kill switch, use the throttle servo trim to kill it, and a small toggle switch for safety. |

Had me going there for a moment, did not recall any cowls in the pics of the US120 and had to go back and posts to realize you were talking about a different model. My mistake in not clarifying that the one in the works is a US120. I should have addressed the post to BalsaOvercast. Took some pics and if I can get them on a site I'll share progress to date. http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/bnbnlapaz...Planes&.view=t |

mikenlapaz - have you run the engine / radio in this configuration yet? With the kill switch so close to your radio, everything I've read would indicate a good chance of interference. :(

No I have not run this first configuration as yet. The seperation is 15 1/2" between planned RX position and the nearest ign. switch. I could make a new servo mount location but chose, to date anyway, to try this. I would be interested to see how and where others mount their radio controlled kill switch. Come you readers share your creative installations!! Would someone who checks the yahoo pics , please advise this thread if it works. I tried it from the thread and it ask for password. If it does not work for others I need to work on getting them to be viewable. Thanks |

They came up for me Mike. Nice work.

Sorry Mike, the picture posted in your YahooŽ album looked as though the kill switch was only an inch or maybe two away from a servo.

Ryobi questions...
Well, I put the APC 18-8 on the Ryobi last night, but I haven't run it yet. The weather forecast for Saturday is Sunny, no breeze, and 70 degrees! I gess you guys know what I'll be doing all weekend!
I plan to take the digital camera to the field on Saturday. If I can find a buddy to take some snapshots of it in flight, I'll post 'em here for all to see. By the way, thank you all for the nice compliments on the plane. It's an ARF, so I can't take all the credit for it, but thanks all the same. Incidentally, my wife picked the colors... John |

I also like your stand, does it work well for balancing? I have more foam than wood on hand and may chop some up for a balance stand. What do you use for adhesive on that extruded polystyrene, I know CA and contact cement melts it. I should have addressed the post to BalsaOvercast |

mikenlapaz:
I actually designed it for just that purpose. Since I build larger planes, mostly, I needed something to hold them and accurately allow me to balance them. It works great! I used plain old epoxy to glue it together, and reinforced the corners with a fine weave fiberglas cloth. I can almost stand on the thing. I've attached some photos of it for a closer look. John |
