Honda GX35 Woodruff key?!
 

So I'm doing my first conversion, a GX35. I picked up the electronic conversion kit from BCMA and have worked through hacking off all the extras. I'm getting ready to put her together when I realized I don't have a Woodruff key for the prop adapter? Not to sound super stupid [:o], but I didn't really even know what a Woodruff key was until I looked at the two matching grooves and assumed I was missing something (did a bit of digging on the net and figured out the missing link). Anyway, If there was one on the clutch, I probably tossed it. Does any one know what size key I would need and where I would buy one. Thanks much, Dave

A good hardware store will have a bunch of different sizes.

Do like I do take the whole engine in, show the guy what your doing and he will fix you up.

You may have to file one down a little but it's a pretty simple ordeal.

Since Woodruff keys are made to standards, you should start looking for a metric one. They should fit somewhat snugly in the recess in the shaft. Maybe a good place to start would a shop that services whatever the engine was used in.

The woodruff key on the GX35 is built into the flywheel and not removable,so if you still have the flywheel you can take some measurements.Does the conversion hub have a groove for a key?

The last conversion I did I had to groove the prop hub with a file.
Not an easy task, I worked on the hub and on the key till my fingers hurt.

What I did was ... I bought some of that apoxy putty with metal in it.
Put it where the key was suppose to be and installed the prop hub.

I waited 5 minutes and pulled it apart.
Everything looked good.
I cleaned it up and put in another dab of putty and everything is still working good.

Take your engine and hub like ralph sugested to ace hardware,or any similier and open all the drawers that have woodruff keys in them until you find one that fits the grove in crank.If the hub doesnt go on youll have to grind off the top of the key a little to make it fit.Actually,if the hub has the taper,just put a little locktite on the taper and tighten down,after its dry it wont move.Its the taper that holds it tight.The keyway is just for people at factories to have somthing to line the magnets up with tdc.Once i used a flat washer and put it in vise and cut off the corner so it was halfmoon shaped.Fit my sachs engine perfect.
