Handstart conversion engine/video
Here is a short explanation on the steps to take to hand start our engine conversions and a quik video showing the method. There are a few other threads on this but none showing how it is being done. This way there will be one thread with an explanation and video.Heres the steps:
1] Make sure you have the air gap set between the flywheel and coil with a cardboard buisness card.Loosen up bolts, slide in card between magnets and coli, then tighten bolts and remove card.Youll have to rotate flywheel to get card out. 2]If your needles havent been set already bottom both out lightly as not to damage seat and screw both of them out 1-1/2 turns. 3]Set magnets to the right of the coil about 1 inch. Then install prop so one tip lines up with magnets.Your magnets and prop should be facing the 1-2 oclock position as if you where looking at the face of a clock. This is the most important part. 4]Now put finger over carb or choke and flip prop easy or just turn over until your finger is wet or fuel drips out of carb.should be about 8 flips.maybe more. Now you can flip.watch the video. The engine is cold when i started in the video. This is a shindaiwa i just did and after warmed up starts on the second to third flip everytime. If ya want to cheat a little, start it at home before you take to the feild, then show off. http://s110.photobucket.com/albums/n...=handstart.flv |

Thank you!
Now I shall try your method on my stupid ******* of an engine and if it doesn't work I'll use the pitcher metheod of getting it airborne!!![:@] Rich |
RE: Handstart conversion engine/video
Not all engines will hand start but so far all of mine ive had i can.[except for 1 ryobi,i sold that].As a matter of fact when i sell them i put in the ad if theyll hand start or not.My next one im going to start on tonight is a mitsubishi.Heres what i have so far:
Echo/manyhomelite/25&30poulan/25shindaiwa/27husqvarnastihl/22/26/28Zenoah23/45toro-troy built/25Mac28-32. Youll be standing there flipping and just about when your going to give up your last flip will almost start it and youll have that AAAH-HA,thats how its done. |
RE: Handstart conversion engine/video
Thank you!:D
You have just given my stupid B*****D (Is that good enough for the moderator:D) of an engine a stay of execution! For now. It runs again (mind you after about 50 flips!) I think the tank cap isn't venting (The original Homelite leaf blower tank) so I think I'm getting pressure lock in the tank preventing the fuel from being syphoned out by the pump. I have just run it without the tank cap and it runs. I still have to set the mixture screws as I think my engine likes to run a bit rich. It even idles without the glow plug driver although it will stall if you open the throttle too quickly. Thanks again for your starting tip. Rich |
RE: Handstart conversion engine/video
Are you running the gas glow mix or just glow. What glow plug are you using.

RE: Handstart conversion engine/video
I'm running the gas glow mix (1 part 10/10 nitro to 2 parts 93ron gas) and I'm using a type F four stroke glow plug.

RE: Handstart conversion engine/video
After opening up your needles a little did you readjust the arm on the needle and seat to let more fuel in the carb. Not the high or low needle, the lever under the cover on side of carb. The one with the 4 screws in it.Theres a how to in the gas/glow thread somwhere between pages 1-5 i think.I think it was posted by av8tor.

RE: Handstart conversion engine/video
I use a slightly different method f flipping my engines over.
I set the prop at 1 o'clock and keeping my hand as close to the center of the prop as I can I flip the prop with a snapping action of the wrist. The closer to the center of the prop you turn it, the faster the engine turns. Mags needs speed to generate spark, some as much as 300 rpm. I'd post a video but the RCVideo is down now. Here we go: http://www.rcuvideos.com/item/8PXSLQ2FFLSVFK62 Echo Chainsaw motor http://www.rcuvideos.com/item/GYZZ4BDXYD2G4VVP Partners concrete saw Both engines were cold set at 28 degrees and had the Carb primed. The second video shows the flip a little better. |
RE: Handstart conversion engine/video
Hmm Haven't tried that one yet! I have a spare carb so I will look in that one first. The transition sucks on this engine so that might be the issue. Thanks again buck.
