Trash or treasure???
 

Hello guys; I picked up a couple or weedie engines free of charge at my Dads house today. They run good and were take out of service because of wear on the string end. One is an Echo and the other a Ryan. Ill be tearing them apart soon and will see what they do.
Anyone have any experience with either. The Echo looks to be a smaller engine and the Ryan might be similar to the Ryobi.

Ryan/IDC (Interdynamics Corp)/Ryobi were from the same source. There is a 26cc and a 31cc version -- same design, different displacement.

the echo is treasure but the ryan unless the newer model will shake the pieces off your plane so the ryan gets a trash vote

Thanks guys; I got a chance earlier to pull them apart. As verified the Ryan/Ryobi may or may not have potential. We will see how it does on the bench and Ill put an extra clamp on just in case ;)

The Echo will need an ignition because the coil is not mounted on the case/jug. The carb is mounted very nice and in a great position for a throttle cable. I had thought about keeping the rear pull starter but with an ignition I dont think hand propping would be a problem.

bn120, I have a old ryan conversion that looks just like the engine pictured. It is one of the smoothest runners that I have.

I have a Lawn Boy that pre dates the Ryan and it doesn't shake anymore than my Homelite or McColluch weedies. The Ryan will be the easist to convert.

But don't forget about the Echo.

Two more minor snags; The Ryan doesnt have a high speed needle (Walbro) and the Echo has a rotating barrel carb similar to a standard model airplane carb. Is that worth messing with or do I need to get new carbs for both??

You will find that the Ryan does have a high speed needle. It's short and recessed in a hole (in the usual high spd needle position) and the hole has been filled in. You will have to adjust the high spd with a screwdriver.

The stock carbs are okay, but like most of these weedie carbs, the venturi are relatively small. If you're looking to increase HP, you may want to go to a larger carb.

The last rotating barrel carb I saw was a fixed jet Walbro(?) - pretty much useless for RC. It's sitting in a bin with of other carbs waiting to be traded in at the local lawn equip. shop for other goodies.

Treasure for both...
Just don't over expect to have a diamond in either...
Just good old reliable motors for pulling that giant trainer around.

Thanks Jim; the Ryan high speed hole is filled with silicone so Ill dig it out to get to the needle.

ANeat, what's the model number of the echo?

you probably allready know that most echos are great runners and have lots of potential, if you don't then read the "don't forget echo" thread, lots of good echo mods courtesy of keith from BME.

Yes I read the Echo thread with all the mods listed :cool: . I think the model number is an SRM (or something like that) 2200. Its a cute little motor for sure.

was going through the literature at http://www.echo-usa.com and found some info.
the srm-2200 is the same 21.2cc as the current srm-2100 but the parts look more like the 25.4cc engines. also the srm-2100 is rated at 11,000 rpm while the 2200 is rated at 8,000 rpm, so maybe it has a longer stroke than the 2100's 26mm and was designed for more grunt at lower speed. might be good for big props.

The Echo site is nice, parts breakdown and everything.
From looking in the manual about the carb there might be a little hope. In the manual they show a screw inside of the idle adjustment that may be the high speed. They give it the "dont adjust this" treatment.

I do have the Ryan converted and had it running yesterday. I didnt have a small enough prop so I was just checking to see if it would fire up. Very nice. I must admit having the carb on the rear is a pain for choking but its perfect when it comes to adjusting the needles :D

Well I scored some more potential engines from the local small engine repair shop.
Echo GT-160 trimmer
Echo SRM-200BE trimmer
2 Homelite trimmers
2 Stihl FS61 trimmers
Stihl FS 36 trimmer
2 Craftsman 2.0 chainsaws

This guy had a bunch of stuff, I just went thru looking for stuff that wasnt locked up and felt like it had good compression.
I was aslo trying to find ones that had carbs on them with high and low speed needles.
It will be interesting to find out if any of these are any good. He has many more to get so Ill see how it goes.

Oh and I got them for $5.00 each
