1/3 sopwith pup conversion?
 

Guys I may be crazy but I picked up a HUGE framed up Balsa USA sopwith pup ! I am going to have to back shelf it probably for awhile..but I wondered what conversion motors out there you guys might suggest ? Its such a bummer that they aren't putting 5 cylinder radials in any of the weadeaters out there !!!! Anyhow, I am reading a lot of info that says the g62 is a nice motor for the plane.. I would love to hear any ideas you might have. I had even wondered aloud to my buddy that maybe there was an ideal belt or gear driven system out there to gear down a smaller motor to swing a big prop ... It sounds like most of those rigs are pricey or have some issues...

A friend of mine father passed away a while ago and he gave my son a 101 inch DVIII scratch built from Bill Wendt plans.I plan on putting a husky 61cc i converted from a [Rancher61 saw].Dont know thw all up weight yet with just the plane.He also has 2 1/3 scale Bals USA pups in his garage,one built up RTF,and the other basiclly just needs finished up.This one is done in the antiqe cloth and he made a cowl out of aluminum flashing.Wish i had that one.I would go with no less than a G62 even though the plans say a 2.7 could fly it but that would be the low end.You might be able to pick up a used byron reduction drive but it might take a while or go to ironbay and see if they sell them.There is also a guy in England i think but like you said hes pricy but i think his is for the G62.Talk to Ralph at rcignitions,hes probably got one,he has somthing of everything else in his shop i think.

Mick Reeves in the UK makes a 1,75:1 drive for a G-62. I bought one for my G-62 a few years ago but have only flown with it a few times. The only prop I had on hand was a 3W 32x12 which seemed to suit the drive well. The only problem was the low pitch, which could only just pull the plane above stalling speed..:-) It did look and sound cool though.

Another option would be the 2,8:1 drive made by Toni Clark in Germany for the G-38. This drive normally spins a 32x18 prop, and was originally made for Toni´s 1:3,3 scale Pup. It may be a little low on power for a full 1:3 scale Pup though.

There is another gentleman in Germany who makes a 2,5:1 drive for the G-62. Spins a 34x20 prop but this is quite expensive as far as I remember.

We have one with a G-62 that shows up at our warbird and bigbird events. Seems to fly fine. We also have a 1/3 Fokker D7 that shows up, dont know the engine in that one. They sometimes do dog fights for the crowd. Love it.

I have a friend with one that is powered by a G80. Seems to be just about right.

I checked out that g62 belt reduction, that IS ONE SWEET deal.. If only the motor and the torquemaster wasn't so high, you can buy alot more motor for the combined price of the two units.. It would be so cool to have it though... maybe someone will come out with a nice 80-100 cc fourstoke motor on a pump, or generator that would work ... Still have my eyes open, and ear to the board, One of these days I know the Captain will yell MOTOR off the starboard side, lowes woodchipper model abc3000 !

How about that 65cc stihl 4 mix 4 cycle thats here in the conversion forum thats on that extra.Its on page 2 towards the top.

The Stihl is the obvious choice to me. plenty of power and great four stroke sound. Ihave one in a 30 lb. 1/3 scale cub on floats that flys great.

I think I am going to keep an eye out for one of those stihls , although after some quick looking around I see that they have a pretty high value to start with, I am not sure it is very easy to stumble onto one... at a converter (cheap) guys price ! ha ha

I wonder if there is anything left of those motors when the pro yard work guys are done with them? I really don't ever see anyone else around here using them ....

It will be nice if a motor of this quality makes it into the mass production throw away area of small motors, Honestly once the two cycles are phased out I am betting it will be much easier to find something that is this nice of a starting point.

All i convert now is stihls,echos,and huskys.Ill keep an eye out for a 65.Not that i wont keep an eye out for any of them any ways.

I bought a new short block from the local Stihl dealer for $200.

Just out of curiousity, what all comes with the short kit, I would guess the entire motor less carb?

Complete motor. No bolt ons-carb, plug, flywheel, etc.

Ok, you guys stop already.... Stop! You are getting me all excited about building my (still in box) 1/3 scale Sopwith Pup. But I don't have the time or space right now!! :(

I will start on it one of these days. REALLY, I will.....
