installing hub magnet
hey i got a rare earth magnet from radio shack the 1/8 " one-what size hole do i drill and how do you lock it in .My guess was to use a smaller drill bit and hand file it till it just barely fits in then use lock tite bearing and sleeve formula to secure it.I wanted to see what everyone thinks about doing it this way.The only problem i see is that the magnet is really thin-does anybody have a favorite way to do this? than x

RE: installing hub magnet
Make sure the polarity is right...use a compass...drill the hole with a kinda worn drill...in an out real quick. Use loctite and tap magnet in hole. There are more ways if you do not like that one....:D

RE: installing hub magnet
A worn out drill bit won't drill a clean hole. Use a sharp one, but a small amount under the diameter of the magnet, eg, .003 under since the drill will probably drill a little oversize in metal. Remember, you can always make the hole larger in diameter, but it is impossible to shrink it. Try drilling a test hole all the way thru a flat plate to see if it is the right diameter to hold the magnet. If you don't drill it all the way thru, you won't be able to push the magnet out again.
Nearly all Hall-effect switches are configured to switch on with a positive magnetic field. The positive field is associated with a magnetic south pole. |

RE: installing hub magnet
I usually drill the hole a touch larger than the magnet by a few thousandths, to allow room for the glue. Then I clean the hole and the magnet with acetone, and JB Weld the magnet in place. Never had one come out yet....

RE: installing hub magnet
now that the magnet is in, make three or four punch marks around the circumference to lock the magnet in place. "belts and braces" system, so you will not loose the magnet when the collar gets hot.
