4 stroke Ryobi
 

Recently was given a Ryobi trimmer with a OHV 4 stroke. It's smooth and spins the 18 inch 2 string head through heavy weeds without slowing down much from pretty good RPM. Says 990r on it. It ain't feather light. Sounds great. Thinking short nose WW1 bird. Any body have experience with this motor?

How about a giant scale Sopwith Camel or British SE-5 Scout. Heck, save all the money for the electronics and build an ultralite. Maybe do like a former R/C hobbiest is doing and build a Pietenpol Camper.

There have been a few of these converted, but they are low on power. Would work ok in something like a cub or a light biplane that flies on the wing instead of on raw power.

I have most of the four-strokes available and the Ryobi is at the bottom of MY list as it is bulky and heavy for its displacement and the power is low. A buddy told me of a guy who made new cams and that helped the power, but that is a lot of work. The Ryobis can be had for cheap though! ( I got mine for $5, never run)

Thanks for the input everybody. First thing I noticed is that it was heavy-esp compared to 30cc class 2 strokes. Yup camming a 4 stroke has always been like piping a 2 stroke but worth it in this case??? I might just try opening up the muff and a little bigger carb before I detrimmer it to see what happens to the power. Except for that it does do pretty job on the weeds.[sm=72_72.gif]

Did anyone try enlarging the intake & exhaust ports on a ryobi 4 stroke. Open thoses windows up...you may be suprized! Capt,n;)

Try ryobi 26cc or various combos thereof. It is out there(or in here).Doing searches can be a drag, but if you try various combos of words you may get what you are looking for.

Just from my personal experience, opening up the intake or exhaust ports won't do a whole lot (talking 4-strokes here). It will help a little, but you won't get the gains you would expect to get from a 2-stroke. If your Ryobi is stock, the biggest,EASIEST gain you will get is by richening up the mixture

Ryobi 26 got a lot of posts and some hope. A post from a guy running one on a "22 pound bi-plane "(that as specific as he got and wants to swap for IMVAC 34). I didn't get time to go thru all the posts but will definately go back.[8D]
