RYOBI Testing

Tested the Ryobi today with APC 17x8....................11 lbs 8 oz thrust..........7000 rpm .Mounted on a Ryan Rebel (mod) 11 lbs 4 oz. so maybe this this little "Wacker" will do an ok job. Riley

Flew the Rebel today.17 x 8 apc------------ not enough load for the Ryobi .Wants to 4cy at high throttle. But the plane flew great! Off to the LHS.

What did you change on your Rebel?? Sounds like a good combo, especially at ~11 lbs

Yes, the Ryobi needs a load to keep from 4 stroking. I run an 18x10 prop on mine. Turns about 6500 rpms full throttle. It would eliminate your 4 stroking and give you about the same thrust. Head temp after a 15 minute flight was about 209 degrees F....seems ok.

Lets see what did I change ? Removed all the extra material from the flywheel including any sign of a cooling fins. Motor mt. was from 3/8 bar stock alum. 6061 and the back plate was 1/8 6061 plate. Other words thin plate with 4 studs. I think wood slection is the biggest weight savings. The "REBEL" being of excellent design was changed very little.1/16 material for the ribs was substituted for the1/8. changed to a two bolt system for the wing attachment which eliminated much balsa block in the leading edge. spar material was changed to 1/4x5/8 bass with 1/16 shear webing,1/8 rib for wing tip. clipped wing to 78 3/4" to fit my shortbox truck.bottom of fuselage is all liteply what is left after everything lightend. ailerons were built up in lou of sheet.all radio gear was as far aft as possible with the battery over the tail wheel.still had to add 1.5 oz to balance. If I build another, which I will. I will move the firewall back 1" more for the ryobi ,add 1.5"dihedral & make it a low winger............................totalweight- fuel is 11 lbs 5 oz. With only six flights sofar not sure if it will be as durable with the "lite" changes.Time will tell! RILEY
