backing plate question

hey guys im loving all this conversion info on here! i just took apart a 32cc engine out of a "weed eater" trimer. it has spring mounted rear exhaust and a rear mounted walbro carb. from all my reading on here im thinking this could possibly be a ryobi engine? theres no manufacturer indication on it anywhere i can find. it does have made in the usa stamped on the flywheel. my real question is... the rear backing plate is made as part of the plastic case of the weed eater. do people cut out the backing plate off the plastic case and use it or do they make a custom aluminum one? im thinking of just cutting and useing the plastic one cause im affraid of messing up the reed valve location. also how do you, or do you wire the igintion cut off switch on the factory ignition system?

Trim that plastic backplate! It will work find and if you do a good trim job,it will look like its supposed to be that way. Sounds like you will need some stand-off type engine mount made though.

Pictures would be helpful too.

yep i trimmed it out, mounted it and it looks awsome! i was wondering about the mounts. stand offs would be the ideal ticket. i'm thinking about making some brackets to mount the stand offs on that sandwich between the bolt and backing plate. or a aluminum box mount of some kind. i guess now i need to start building a big azz plane to put this on! : )

that's a poulan 32, they convert like a ryobi other than the muffler(don't know if they are a direct fit as I don't have a ryobi apart to compare), I haven't ran either of the two that I have to know how much power they have.

as far as the kill switch, take the wire that went to the stock kill switch and put it to a toggle switch or push button, the other wire from the switch goes to the engine somewhere, it's just a ground, grounds out the ignition to kill the engine.

who wants to make a prop hub for this motor? : ) i guess its a long shaft motor, the shaft is 3.75 inches long. is it even worth spending money on to convert it? it seems pretty heavy?

This one looked exactly like the one you have there until I shaved it up. The one I have here is a Craftsman 32cc weedeater.

Any of you guys know if that poulan 32 has the same shaft taper and diameter as a ryobi 31?
