My Ebay Engine, $30 Ryobi 31cc
 

Bought this off Ebay for $30, paid $10 shipping. Came with motor mount, Walbro WT-536 carb (looks new) and new spark plug.
The engine doesn't feel to have as much compression as the Homelite 25cc I'm converting at the moment. Removed carb and
rear case cover, found there wasn't a gasket. Where do you get gaskets for Ryobi online?

I took the jug off. The piston and sleeve have no scores. The ring looks good but it's hard to tell by looking how much it might
be worn. It is fairly clean inside too.

Also noticed there is no gasket between muffler and jug. Looks like red silicone rubber.

Does the carb really need the choke plate? It's not a choke butterfly but a plate that slides over the intake of the carb.

Haven't had time to do much else yet.

I would say you got a pretty good deal.

Just make a gasket out of card stock. Something like the back cover of a spiral notebook works well. On the exhaust, I usually just use a thin smear of silicone instead of a gasket as well.

The crankcase must be sealed air tight so make sure there are gaskets or the area is sealed.

The gasket was probably removed from under the cylinder to get more compression? Reseal it the way it was. The card stock will be OK though

Not saying it doesn't show any wear. It's been run but a good running engine shouldn't have any scores.

The original gasket is there between the case and jug. Once I get it running I might try removing it to up comgression.

A neat trick I was shown years ago for when you don't have a gasket is, put a light coat of Permatex on one surface then run a silk thread down the center and overlap the end about 1/2". Bolt it all back together using the silk thread as the gasket. This works best on metal to metal surfaces normaly seperated by a paper gasket. The Permatex is there only to hold the thread in place. Silk woun't carbonize like cotton will under heat. I've done this when rebuilding motorcycle engins. It works, no leaks. If done between the case and jug of a weedy engine it would increase compression.

Yes, I thought it was a good deal too.

Done the card stock - gasket trick on the Homy 25cc engine. Just thought it would be nice to have the orginal gasket, they can't be expensive.

Ok on the silicone exhaust seal, I suppose a card stock gasket would burn up eventually.

The easy way to make the gasket out of card stock is to ink up the mating surface and press it onto the paper. You will then have a perfect pattern to cut with your razor.

Remember, if you don't use a gasket between the block and crankcase, you will change the port timing. you may need to port the exhaust to get back to the desired porting, I have found it best to use a gasket. Flathead

You can make the exhaust lighter if you pull the guts out of it ands lets the engine breath better.

Maybe but you may be giving up some power on your 2 cycle if you don't have a-little back pressure. I had a two cycle motorcycle once that produced more power with the muffler baffel installed than without.

Well, so much for a cheap engine! I found the crank bearings to be bad. I don't know how they did it but the magneto was 180* out. Oh, and the
cylinder is the low emission type with the slots.

Sounds like the Enya .19 I bought with the piston, sleve and cylinder rusted tight - at no extra charge.

Well, I got some good news! The guy I bought it from refunded my money, even the shipping and told me to keep the parts. So I guess there's still some honest people selling on Ebay.

I also found a case with good bearings so I picked it up for a few $. Since I'll put the sloted cylinder on, I figured it wouldn't be all that good for an airplane engine, so my son and I will make an airboat out of it.

My brother has a Ryobi that I set up for him on an 80" wingspan 14+ lb. Ryan's Rebel. It has the slots in the cylinder, but runs pretty good. It turns an APC 18 x 6 prop at 7600 rpms, and has no modifications other than CDI ignition and a gutted/opened up stock muffler. It has enough power to loop that plane at around half throttle or a bit more.
