EI modules
 

Hey, i was wondering if it mattered what type of EI was used. I have a chance to buy one off a DL engine for $70.00. Will it work, or is it specifically designed to only work with the engine it came off of?

....to use on what?  If you are replacing an EI, some are swappable with the RCEXL ignition, and some are not.  Some hall sensors need exposure to one side of a magnet, or the other pending the brand as well.  Timing can also be an issue pending what you are doing with it.  I would suggest giving as much information as you can, about what you intend to do with the ignition, and there will be plenty of help here to guide you along.

thats the thing, im not sure which engine im going to put it on.  I have a stihl 25.4cc, a ryobi, and might be getting a poulan 25cc.  I was just wanting to know if an ignition made or used on one type of engine was swappable with another.  There is a 80% chance it will make its way to the stihl, but I might go gas/glow.  This ignition is alot cheaper than buying one online, cause its in Canada, and it wont have to be shipped.

if it comes with the hall sensor, and you check which end of the magnet you need to expose to the hall sensor by turning it on and moving the sensor across a magnet before you put it in the hub, then it'll work. sometimes the hard part is cross referencing the hall sensors themselves.

the ignition doesn't care what engine it's on as long as it's put on appropriately.

sorry I didn't reply earlier, I was in a rush the first time I saw this post.

I believe some of the DL's come with the RC EXL ignition, I don't know if that's what you have or not, one of my flying buddies has one that has a reference port to the crankcase for whatever reason, don't know what that's supposed to do.

I dont have the ignition yet, i didnt want to buy it until i was certain it would work.  I had a close look at the stihl engine, and i dont have anywhere to mount the sensor.  I guess on the back side of the engine, but then i will have to get a part machined.  So i think it will go on the poulan once i get it.
I like gas/glow, but its hard to get 10/10 glow fuel here, so it will be easier to just mix gas and oil.

the sensor mount doesn't have to be fancy and machined, get a piece of aluminum of some sort and mount it to something, as long as it's solid...<div>

I haven't converted it yet, and didn't plan on going EI on it, but maybe I can give you an idea or two... I think it's somewhere in the 19-20cc range

How close does the sensor have to be to the magnet to fire? (in general)  I think i can make something using the bolts for the jug.  The hard part will be making the mount rounded so it is perfectly parallel to the hub.

A gap for sensor of about .010-.015 should be fine. Capt,n
