Glowplug XXL
Hello engineers
I'm looking into a gasoline to glowplug conversion of a 50cc 4 stroke. Would anyone know where to get a glowplug that's the same size as the present (standard) park plug? Or do all the big glowers like Zenoah G-38 use standard (small) glowplugs? Thanks already, Peter |
Glowplug XXL
Only one size glow plug made, 1/4-32 thread...C&H has adapters..We run a 289cc race plane, up to 20% nitro, have not changed glow plugs for 2 years, probably 36 heats of up to 9000 rpm racing...McCoy #9 plugs....
We're gonna frame the glow plugs if they ever go out :D |

Tksalot,
Must be possible to make a bigger size though, just platinum wire mightbe a bit tricky to find :-) I checked C&H, I gues: "75. Spark plug, Adapter, 14mm to 1/4x32 ................. $9.95" Is the one I need? Peter |

Peter,
I am trying a similar thing. I had a friend make me up an adapter that allowed me to replace the spark plug in a Zenoah G62 with an OS #8 glo plug. I have not yet built an aircraft for this engine but I anticipate installing it in a bi-plane. It runs with plenty of grunt on 10% synthetic oil 90% methanol and no nitro. I would be interested in hearing what percentage of oil other people are using in these gas to glo conversions. Has anyone tried using 5% acetone in place of the nitro in a Zenoah engine? I believe that the makers of the Tartan Twin used to recommend this substitution. |

While the glowplug conversion is easy, you need to remember that glows are thirstier because methanol doesn't contain the BTU's of gasoline. In some engines this means that you need a larger main jet for more fuel flow in order to get them to run right. Not a big deal on smaller engines, but at 50cc's you may need a different jet. What kind of engine is it?

Yes as Maxtenet says more infact almost twice as much when racing mondifieds a friend of mine claimed alkky was too hot when I quized him he was trying to run the same injector as on gas he had to get another return and jet system from hilborn to run the alky. some carbs will just not flow enough fuel.

Rcign1.
I am impressed. ;) How much oil are you guys using? :D |
Glowplug XXL
So is the competition :D We mix our own fuel, 8 to 10% Klotz. ...It's been working so well we're afraid to change anything...We get some oil on the fuselage from the exhaust, but no big deal, just wipe it off and go again..Uses almost a gallon of fuel in a 6 lap heat, about 4 miles racing and a few laps flying around before and after each heat, maybe 5 miles total.....
