Poulan 42cc installing EI need help!
Hi, Ive got a 42cc Poulan that I want to put an EI unit on. Other than the challenge of making some kind of bracket to hold the sensor, I was wondering if anyone had ever done one, and what the best initial timing was? I see alot of trimmer engines are around 25 deg BTC, but my experience is about 10 degress BTC works better.
Thanks! |

Do you have computer timing control or does your ignition unit have fixed timing?
Original: TKG Perfect timing for most engines. 6 deg BTDC at idle and 30 degrees BTDC at full throttle. IN reality 4-8 at idle and 28-30 at WOT. If you have to chose which end of throttle to have the timing correct at chose WOT and live with what ever idle is. |

Flyrc,
Here are a couple of pics of my last Poulan 42. It was converted by a friend here in PA. He used to do machining work for Brilleli (SP) when they used the Poulan. Unfortunately at this time he is no longer producing conversion kits. On this engine he machined the cylinder fins to reduce weight. Not worth the effort. As far as timing etc. can't help with that. They are good running engines. But can't take a hit from 500 feet full bore without breaking everything. DON"T ASK[&o] |

Well, he did nice work. I like the looks of the fins done that way.

Pretty clever way to adjust the timing, was the ring holding the magnet made to fit the Crank Taper? I guess to adjust the timing you would loosen the prop hub, loosen the bolt on the magnet ring, rotate it to suit, then tighten everything back up?

I think it is even easier than that. I believe the magnet ring just clamps around the prop adapter. You just loosen the pinch nut and rotate the ring, around the prop adapter, to adjust the timing. I have made a number of prop adapter setups similar to this.

that looks like one of my setups but I changed the holder to use both front bolts ,I haven't gotten my laptop out to get a photo yet. Yes the ring with the magnet slips on the hub and is held with a set screw when timed
