One way to make a prop hub
I thought this might be of some interest to the group. This is one way, no the only way, certainly not the fastest way. I have had less trouble with my props being out of balance wih this method. It really bother me when the engine shakes more than it should so, I prefer to spend the extra time.
The wife is setting up a website. She wanted me to document some of the things I do while hold up in the shop. This was a contribution to the cause. If anyone finds any mistakes let me know so she can fix it. http://armstrongplace.com/ScotsGarage.aspx |

Could you post some good close up pictures of that boring bar you made from music wire for me?
Thanks, AV8TOR |

A flat bed scanner is a good way to do little flat objects. Here are the boring bar pictures. The black marks are for depth of cut. Basically a boring bar is a lathe tool sideways on the end of a stick. If you can make a lathe tool bit you can do this. Old two flute milling cutters make excellent boring bars. Drill bits work too.

Thanks!
Yeah, I've used that scanner trick before. Saves some time for quick pics of items. Just don't have a printer/scanner anymore right now... [:o] AV8TOR |

RE: One way to make a prop hub
I notice your machine has a chuck "made in England" so not "all american" I guess.
Do agree there are many chinese rubbish machines out there, some are better than others, mostly the ones from Taiwan. Not possible to get a "true running part" from a 3 jaw chuck after it has been removed and refitted after machining outer surface. Any machinist will tell you that, it is one reason why there are 4 jaw chucks. 1 thou runout doubles when you bore the centre hole. Most 3 jaw from England will have around 1 thou so it is not surprising unless the jaws have been stretched or the chuck mis-handled at some time in it's life. You can get a cheap 4 jaw made in India for example that will give 100% accuracy for these type of jobs even though they may appear a bit junky. Suffice to say the tailstock centre is properly aligned to begin with. |
