Ryobi reed plate
 

The hot thing in the gas engine forums are the 30-35cc rear induction engines and most have a pyramid type reed plate assembly.

I wonder how viable it would be to use the reed plate block from one of these in a Ryobi?

The DLE 30R would be the easiest to obtain but the reeds themselves are possibly marginal in this engine?

From Tower you would have to buy the rear induction conversion for $15 to get the assembly? Tower/Hobbico is not exactly with the game on the spare parts as you cannot get the reeds themselves but there are other sources like Valley View and individual sources or you can make them yourself?

What about crankcase volume if you have a flat backplate with a hole to mount the reed plate sticking inside the engine?

Well, then, there is the issue of the assembled crankshaft rather than being a forged one?

I really rather think the crank would hold up, at least to 8500 rpms or so.

Very viable

Don't those ones seat on the actual backplate itself? Making reeds is a fun thing to do but they need to be molded to shape or punched out in one piece - cutting with shears or a knife creates stress raisers and they fail very quickly.

You could also try

Homelite ones from your local saw shop
Husqvarna motorbike dealers have some very nice reeds available to them
SV Engines in China is in fact the major manufacturer of just about every Chinese RC engine - they also have a large range of reeds available. Maybe the local SV dealer (is it still TBM?) wil have access to the blocks.

Alternatively - they are VERY simple to make - A bit of ali bar stock and a little time on a mill wil make a good VEE block. A Sheet of Mylar will make some nice reeds (make individual ones to get over the issue of punching them out) and a piece of G10 for a carb insulator and you have your new setup.

Crankcase volume is a very large part of the secret of high power on a 2 stroke crankcase inducted engine - it is fun to experiment with

The design of the Syssa 30 reed assembly is much more precise but you will have to beg Todd to sell you one.

That assembly costs $15 plus shipping from Tower and it is not parts express qualified.

The DLE-30 is an engine that intrigues me very much. The power to weight ratio is about as good as it gets. I would love to see a rear induction and rear mounted exhaust version. It would be perfect for warbirds that had inline engines on the full sized airplane. Basically the Ryobi layout made as light and powerfull as a 30cc can get.

The Syssa 30 comes from the manufacturer with all the desirable features that anyone ever wanted on a DLE30 but it costs more too.

I have a Syssa 30 and Also a Wolf Predator 30 with the side carb.

The Wolf Predator was somewhat of an ultimate Homelite 30. They also came as rear carb versions.

Because it uses the same off the shelf parts from SV as most of the other "new" Chinese "32cc (ish)" engines use (DLA included).

Ya get what ya pay for. At least the DLE brand name has a proven track record of looking after its distributors (and therefore ultimately the product users) with solid support when things go wrong.
