Default 2014 DAWN PATROL over Gilman Springs,Ca - April 12 - A jolly good time!

Gilman Springs R/C Flyers did it again! ...hosted another successful annual DAWN PATROL Scale Fly-In.
These Dawn Patrol fun flys are gaining popularity as many of our long time kit manufacturers and kit cutters are today producing more and more World War One scale models.
Even the ARF makers are producing some fantastic examples of many lesser known fighters, observation planes and even bombers. There are now so many types represented at these Dawn Patrol events, there's something for everyone. It's not just Sopwith Camels and Fokker DR1 triplanes.

Since most of our nation's club members seem to prefer flying in the mornings, it's a natural choice to fly
WWI types and take advantage of the usually calmer conditions.

This year's event attracted about thirty flyers from all over Southern California. From as far as Ventura County, 100 miles to the West, to San Diego South and Coachella Valley to the East.
They came from every county in SoCal. Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties.
There were some terrific scratch-built planes as well as the ever-popular ARF "bashed" models.

You need to get up pretty early to catch them in the air!
I did miss some of the more ...veteran-flyers in action because they fly too early for me as I like to sleep in.
However, I did manage to capture the essence of the event. ( I think )

DAWN PATROL over Gilman Springs 2014
...Mel Santmyers, a member of the Gilman Springs club and the Hemet Model Masters club and a 35 year founding-member of the U.S. Scale Masters Association flying his big Fokker DVII.
I believe Mel built the DVII from the Arizona Model AirCrafters kit. Mel has never missed competing in the U.S. Scale Masters program of regional qualifiers as well as attending the annual
National Championships. He has also never missed attending the annual 4 day West Coast Giant Scale R/C Festival at Castle AFB in Atwater,Ca. over the Memorial Day weekend. This event
has been a California must see & do for something like thirty years. Mel is in his eighties and still loves to fly scale models of all types. He continues to support many club's events each year
and he is a mentor to many novice modelers throughout SoCal. He flys several days each week at both the Gilman and Hemet club fields as well as attends funflys all around SoCal. You can read more about Mel's past involvements in R/C at the U.S. Scale Masters website. See - "Member Spotlight" http://usscalemasters.org/forums/ind...e=MelSantmyers
