Default Warbirds Over Iowa July 19, 2014

I would like to welcome everyone to Warbirds Over Iowa 2014. This is our 11th year for the event, and it is always a lot of fun. Plenty of spectators to show up to see the aircraft fly. You can sign up at RCflightdeck (no charge) and pay when you arrive. If you have any questions, I'll be watching this post.

That's great Jeff, I'll be looking forward to seeing it. I know it would be a big project for me, but someday I'd like to build my own Ki-45. Last year you wanted to attend, but had trouble finding someone to come with you. Hopefully you have better luck this year.

There are a group of guys talking of coming, but I plan to make it either way....last year just fell apart when the plan failed. This year, I planned a solo trip, but maybe some guys will come.

Great to hear Jeff, I'm hoping I'll get to see that Anderson Ki-45 fly. Any more word on the fiberglass fuse that someone was talking about offering?

Our photographer is one of the best, he'll get some good shots of your aircraft

I think Darren is planning a glass fuse for the Ki, but I have not talked to him for a while now.

I am trying to recruit some guys from the Des Moines Modelaires to come over.. I think I have a few lined up.. It will probably be weather determined... Maybe see you there Jeff. We have talked a few times at Owatonna, I posted the video of the Polikarpovs BAD day a few years ago

I did have a few questions... would these two planes be allowed?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4PEKI4Nak0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHOIHTx3cJ8 And also I have heard in the past about some rule being required at SOME events of a separate radio controlled kill switch being required (non choke)...

Just trying to convince some guys.. and see if they would be able to fly....

The elan jet is not modeled after an actual military aircraft, so that would not be considered appropriate. The Freewing 262 is fine. Two of our members have Dynam 262's that will be at the event. Current AMA rules do not require an ignition kill switch that I am aware of. It's a good idea to have a way to kill a gas plane in the air, and a RC controlled choke would handle that need.

I also look at the weather when deciding to travel to an event, especially a one day. Look at Weather.com and see the wind direction (use Robins Iowa). Our runway is oriented NNW - SSE. Right now it looks like a good day, with a 9 mph wind straight down the runway. We'll see how it looks as we get closer. If Saturday is a bad weather day the event can get moved to Sunday.

Thanks for the reply Todd... I know we have been to a few warbird events where they are happy to have the turbine.. others say it doesn't qualify.. I just wanted to be sure where you guys stood. The same guy has a NICE turbine Phantom but unfortunately it has not been flown....

The weather report is looking good for Saturday. If it holds up we should have an outstanding line up of aircraft and pilots. If you have never been to our event we get quite a large audience and we have a great announcer on the microphone. It makes for a great overall experience. Hope you can fly with lots of people watching!

Where are those Mustangs!

Sounds good Jeff, the weather Friday evening should be good as well, so if you get into town in time and would like to do some flying come on over.

I keep thinking of things to ask.. What is the electric situation? are there many outlets spread out? Bring long extension chords? or just charging off of your own batteries?

Looks like we will have excellent weather. Mostly Sunny, high of 82 degrees, and a 8 - 9 mph wind down the runway. There's a lot of planning and work involved, but I can't take credit for the weather. Hope to see you all there, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

I hate it when life gets in the way of flying. I am sorry to say I could not make it to the Warbird gathering. Please ease my pain and post a few pictures when you get the chance. Thanks.
