John, I hope you are right. Yes, we did change the format this year and we suspect this will impact the turnout. Whether or not the effect is good or bad will depend on what our fellow pilots want for an event. We will miss the flight demonstrations the 3-D pilots put on. They were really terrific. The 3-D flight style has come of age and stands on it's own merit as a super event if this is what you want. Out Big Bird Fly In will not have 3-D this year as the new format guidelines point out on our website. We are hoping this will encourage more pilots who prefer a more traditional Big Bird format to attend.

At any rate, I assure you we will have a fun time and I'm really happy to hear that members from your club are looking forward to attending this year.

For those of you who are interested in this format change and event style please let us know so we can get a feel for the attendance expectation. In the past we have had 75 to 100 registered pilots with many many spectators. We have nice covered bleachers for the spectators with an air conditioned club house with food and refreshments.

Sincerely,

Roger F. Woodward

Dick, thanks for the response and looking forward to you visiting with us. Thanks for the photos and very nice work. Hope you will bring a few of your scratch builts for us to marvel over. this is one of the fun things that our members and guest really enjoy. This is that time of year when everyone brings out their latest and greatest airplanes. They are fun to look at and even more fun to see fly.

Yes, the field has changed a good bit over the years. We hope it's just getting better and better. We are very fortunate to have such a nice facility that is so well kept. When I first saw the place I knew this was the right place for my son and I to get to know great people and enjoy RC flying.

Roll 60, Yep, I have been working on a new bird that is 1/4 scale so hope to have it ready for the event. I lost my Pitts last year during this event and completed Pitts-II back in Oct. I have been flying her to make sure I'm ready. Pitts-II has a DA 50 on the nose with the same smoke system from Pitts-I. All is in good flying condition and doing just fine.

9 of my friends and myself were coming until we learned of the "new Format". [sm=eek.gif] I wish you all the best of luck but neither I, nor my buds will be traveling your way.

Mark, Maybe some other time. Plain and simple, this is not a 3-D event. I have it down that you and 9 of your buds won't be attending. Hm...... having 10 people who know each other from anywhere, let alone Missouri would have been an all time event record.

dicknadine - sorry about the health problems and certainly understand. The wives do come first.

All of us go to fly-ins as a group. It makes for alot of fun. We all just got back from the rally of the giants in Muncie. Had a blast. Sorry we won't be coming to your event, I was looking forward to it!
Looks like the next big one will be Hot Springs AK on July 23-25th. It will be an Extreme Aerobatic Club event. I guess if you guys have 100 guys show up you'll only be down 10% by us not showing up. It's all about fun, right?

Mark, It is all about fun and hope you and your friends have a good time. The Extreme Aerobatic event you mention for Hot Springs, Ak. would no doubt be a better option.

JUST TO CLEAR THE AIR, AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS.

THE HUNTSVILLE CLUB IS VERY UNFRIENDLY TO LARGE SCALE AEROBATIC AIRCRAFT, THEIR PILOTS, FAMILIES, AND FRIENDS.

CONCERNING THE UNCALLED FOR (SA) REPLY TO MARK T. AND HIS FRIENDS.THERE ABOUT 80 OF US THAT TRAVEL AND FLY TOGETHER. A GREAT MANY OF WHICH CAME TO YOUR EVENT LAST YEARS EVENT.

YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO HOLD THE TYPE OF EVENT YOU WANT, WITH THE PLANES YOU WANT FLY IN IT.

HOW EVERY IF YOU ARE UP FRONT AND HONEST WITH THE PILOTS AND SPECTATORS. YOUR NUMBERS WILL BE IN THE TOILET.

We were actually going to go to both events and weren't really looking for an "option". You had posted earlier you wanted to know was coming and who wasn't. I'm not being pissy, I was just looking forward to going to your flyin. One of your members who I met at several flyins had invited me and my friends to come to Huntsville. I was dissapointed , that's all.

Gene, John is right. This issue has been beaten to death on RCU among other places as well. If you guys travel together, and came to the event last year together, then surely you and your friends know by now that we have changed the format to prohibit 3D during this event. I find it hard to believe that any of your group had any intentions of coming to begin with, so why was it even necessary to say so, unless the intentions were for nothing more than to attempt to discredit the event, bring up old news and bad feelings. I was sincere in my response. It seems perfectly fine for you guys to go to something like this.

Looks like the next big one will be Hot Springs AK on July 23-25th. It will be an Extreme Aerobatic Club event.
If it's really OK for us to organize a NON-3D event, then let us do so without all the fuss and negativity.

We were honest last year with all pilots and we have been upfront about the changes to the event format this year as a result of the issues which occurred last year. I have personally drawn attention to the format change when posting the event and in providing updates as the date for the event nears. There is a detailed response on our website to the very accusations being brought up, again. The response was written by me and it explains in detail the history behind this matter. If anyone feels it is necessary to go there, here is the link to the site with the clubs position on this matter.

Here is the link outlining the 2004 format, which includes a response from the Club President and the CD for this event.

Dick, we understand and maybe you can catch us on another event. We have the War Bird schedule for Aug 14-15. This too is a great event with really nice planes to marvel over. I am amazed what some of the builders do with such detail and quality craftsmanship.

The 2004 Alabama Big Bird Fly In is scheduled for 9-10 July.

We have over 200 members with some of the finest builders you will find anywhere in the country. I am aware of some new projects that have been underway that will be ready by event day. Bring you best and most favorite model out for all to see. Our members really enjoy seeing the new birds people have worked so hard on.

We will be awarding 16 trophies 1st-3rd - Gas Scale, Glow Scale, Military, Gas or Glow Sport, ARF and Best of show.
Door prizes include 3 computer radios and more.
Barbecue dinner Saturday evening - free to registered pilots and $8.00 for others.
Pilots can begin registering and conducting casual and test flying anytime on Thursday 8 July 2004. The event begins Friday 9 July 2004 at 0900.
Entry fee 20.00 - AMA Only required

For specific event details, restrictions, aircraft minimum specs and directions, please refer to our website event page below - Please note format change.

Hope you can come and join us.

Personally I like to see some of all the types of flying....3D included!!!! I don't think prohibiting 3D flight was a good call either. I attended this event last year and thoroughly enjoyed seeing those monsters hovering around and gracefully "dancing" out there defying gravity. I also enjoyed seeing the scale birds. They had times alotted for each different group, it's not like anybody was refused flight time!

I've heard over and over the reasons for not allowing 3D flyers, but I still think it's a bad decision to ban them at the event. Besides, if you took away all the 3D guys from last years event...you wouldn't have but half or less of the planes...and half or less the crowd...and half or less the good flying.

........just my two cents worth

We are days away from our Big Bird Fly-In and things are really beginning to fall into place for a fun event. I was away for a few days with the family so haven't been able to stay up on the boards. Here are a few updates.

No, we don't provide RV hook-ups, but we do have electrical outlets in the pit area for charging Tx and Rx batteries. We have ample room for parking and for RV's. We have an air conditioned clubhouse and a cold drink machine. Beverages, packaged hot sandwiches and snacks will be available. Don't forget the pilots dinner for Sat. night.

We now have 3 radios and a Big Bird ARF kit, among many other prizes for registered pilots. Here is a new model that will be competing for one of the many plaques that will be awarded to those pilots with the best looking airplanes.

So, this is the time to bring that special bird out for all to see. We hope you will schedule this event on your summer calendar.

Please not the format change on our website.
