Box art and instructions / manual
#26

Well, I got out the camera and 'puter for some stuff. Hope someone likes it...
The MVVS 2.5 on the right was originally RC. I made a "dump" type venturi for it (no sprinkler).
The significance of the Mills replica box is tha it is from the seventies.
The Rivers Silver Streak is original. I bought it back in the fifties.
More to follow...

Apologies for poor pics. Some of the instructions are oil soaked and text bleeds through. Most of these engines/instructions/boxes are from the fifties. I haven't flown that Rivers since ~1965.
Whew!! That's all for now.

GCB-Interesting parts sheet, bolt on cylinder over liner sort of like MVVS and a little PAW thrown in too, My engine from that time period a Drone 29 fixed compression, looks like they were light years ahead on this one roller crank , nice carb, etc, etc Martin

If you look at the exploded view of the Silver Streak, note that both roller bearing and the crank are sitting in a sleeve. I understand you remove the entire assembly to work on it. I have never had reason to disassemble it. It only has a couple of hours on it. You need a pretty good size plane for it. Although it runs good, it is heavy. Last plane I had it in was a Flite Streak Junior (I've had half a dozen of them over the years), and it would not turn very tight. A Flite Streak or Peacemaker would fly much better.

GCB Thats bit of brilliant technology no gymnastics to pull a crank> It would cost tons of money to pull this concept off today, a real art of design and machining and from the 50's???
Looks like we have forgotten more than we have learned or just make is cheap as we can cut the corners martin

Here is a brilliant site for infromation on the Rivers Silver Streak, and indeed many older engines -

That explains it, they produced or made parts for full size engines, the crank thing they scaled down I believe this same technique is used in many other large shafts, thing the same principle use in large ship shafts they may go to 18 inchs or larger ,sectionlized just take out the bad one, put in a good one, rebuild (re-bearing it) and keep it for the next fix.they can do this at sea if needed of course the ship may have no power to the screw for an hour or so but no big deal till the section replaced ( think this a rare thing but they are prepared for it) or course if a twin screw vessel they keep going martin

Today's first offerings:
One of the several Replica DEEZIL sources. The FROG 1.49 vibramatic I bought used from a friend in ~1965, while I was still in the Navy. It was well worn, somewhat abused, and the lower conrod bearing is a bit worn...but it still runs.

And the final entry for today is the Elfin B R 2.49. It is a reed engine. I bought it used, only to find that the ring that holds the cylinder on was cracked. I tried to repair it a couple of times to no avail. Guess I'll probably have to get a machinist to make me another. This may have been a common defect in this engine since shortly after I got it, the company made one similar but with (I think) a screw-on cylinder.

I've started to clean up the box illustration for the AM10. Maybe you could do a repro box with this ? If anyone is interested I'll complete and do the side labels.

Christmas in October..... I got a package from Australia today!
These pics are as I opened everything up:
I see that Dave Owen is back from Europe with the last of the Schlosser's and I don't think that there will be any more made, ever, so this is the last of them.
Back on topic - treasure Dave Owens instruction sheet, it is far more pertinent than any factory directions and I have one for the MP Jet that just seems to make better sense than the Czech translation that comes standard with it. (But I must admit that my Australian MP Jet instructions are far more detailed though.)

On a positive note, this last run was a break from the norm in that the engines all came with exhaust collectors-even the .25cc.
On an even more positive note, I had a bunch of spares ordered for the MP .061 BB Jet diesels that he was mostly able to fill from his stocks. He inquired at MPJ and got a reply today that everything on my post-order wish list (save new engines) was going to be included in his next shipment from MPJ!!
Guys, if you want a Schlosser of your own or spares for MP-Jet engines, I wouldn't wait. He's really nice to do business with too-very responsive and good for his word.

Their is no reference to Owen on either of those sheets, alluding to Benno instead. Under the "fuel" heading, "kero" is replaced with "petroleum" with the addition of "Do not use synthetic oils" in the photos while the correction and addition is missing on my sheets.

Recycled flyer, i think the instruction sheet is the work of Benno or someone else, not David Owen. I got my engine, with the kind assistance of an intermediary in Germany, directly from Benno and it is supplied with the same two sheets of instruction that Dave has posted photos of.

With my MP JET I recieved some Owen based instructions that were very detailed and when I saw his stamp on some paper work I jumped the gun back there, oh well!
Cheers mate.

My .25 came directly out of Benno's hands via RocketRob and they are written in English. Someone else had to have written them for him but I don't know who-Benno had to have orders and inquiries transcribed for him when he sold engines and Rob had to have two interpreters with him. Rob probably babbled and drooled enough that two were neccesary!

Here is some info on the requested FROG 2.49. I have three of them and after looking closely at the one I took pictures of, it is one I bought new back in the fifties and it has two non-standard repairs on it. The tommy-bar wire broke and I put a new wire in it using epoxy, and the needle is a WEBRA generic replacement needle and spraybar with the needle wire clipped for protection.
