It's Autumn again in the Southern Hemisphere, so time to enjoy some cooler weather and revive this thread!
***
In Australia, Control Line racing based on the KeilKraft "Phantom" is popular in some parts. Simple, fun and inexpensive.
There are various sub-classes based on diesel engine type (PB or BB) and displacement.
OK, a test for the guru's of model diesel engines. What are the engines powering this squadron?

I'm a very long way short of guru status, but will hazard a couple of guesses.
Taipan, Frog, Oliver, Mills dunno and dunno.
Do I win?
Ray and I anticipated the onset of Autumn, and got out for a bit of Kero burning last week. Way too much fun, topped by my successful Midge flight (See PAW thread) and Ray's Ruski powered Taipan Trainer - indecently quick. And he discovered the hot restart trick.

G'day Greg
You get the guernsey for having a go!
OK ... clockwise from rear (drum roll):
1. FORA 1.5
2. Doonside Mills .75 (in a KK Champ??)
3. ED Comp Special
4. JENA 2 cc
5. Prototype No. 2 of the AAMotive "Tyro" 1.9 cc (*sweet!*)
6. Modela (MVVS) 2 cc
Note: some of the Phantoms are the original slim fuselage version.
My thanks to Brian Stebbings, Ian Dickson and David Burke for permission to reveal these beauties.

Just had a great session of autumn dieseling with Dave Owen. The models were a Wingmaster with Enya SS25D Al-Chro, a Spectre with PAW 19TBR, and a Blue Pants with CS Oliver. Everything ran beautifully - even the CS, which continues to surprise me by not throwing a rod or otherwise blowing up.
It's good for us to use this field while we can - in a few weeks we'll lose it, and it'll turn into a driving range.

This has been a really good field, which the club has occupied for a few decades now. Unfortunately, the owner isn't particularly sympathetic or easy to get on with. A couple of alternative fields are being looked at, but they'll be much further away and may not be set up to accommodate CL (Dave and I are about the only CL fliers now). I might even end up joining KMFC instead.

Lovely Spectre Steve. I located some further shots of it from another site. Hope you don't mind
.
For those unfamiliar with this elegant C/L model:
"The KK Spectre was Keil Kraft's top of the range control line stunter for 2.5 - 3.5cc (.15 - .20cu.in) diesel and glow-plug motors, designed by aeromodelling design genius, Dave Platt."

Would Doonside be closer? At least you wouldn't need to cross the harbour.
Doonside is located at Whalan Reserve https://plus.google.com/112659242765...ut?gl=au&hl=en

The other shame about this is that I've got a 9-y.o. who is pretty keen on FF. We won't have anywhere suitable nearby now - thank goodness for things like Old Phartz and Oily Hand.

In a case like that I find a lonely corner with long grass , Im sure there are lots of them in Wollongong , and Im not kidding about the mill , I was there a while back
and it was an incredible din and grinding of metal
, just like controline flying ,
maybe you could sneak over the wire , they would not know you were there

I flew this one , its an 09 with an 8x5 prop , I had about 7 flights , very light wind and overcast with some light drizzle , took a bit of tuning and took a while to warm up each flight , it goes off burping quite a bit but seems to come on tune after about 1 minute of flight
the rod and the crank are a bit loose
but it seems to run OK and the tank gives good warning its going to cut
I made some mods to the motor a while back , a bit rough
and it vibrates a lot at some certain revs then smoothes
its on a very light mount , no strength up there

Cat,
Sounds to me like it's not warming up properly.
You may need to play with the DII % to stop the burping.
I had a similar run yesterday with the Sharma. It took a good warm up in the pits, and then to 30secs or so to come on properly in the air.

Greg , you cant get it to warm up real good when you have to run it so slow on the ground
, if I run it fast on the ground it seems to go overcompressed in the air about 1.5 minutes later ,
especially in manouvers
It was drizzling , and I dont know how the improver affects it ,
I have 6cc's in 500 mls of fuel
with some really old castor that may have gone off , is that possible, its about 15 years old in the open

Cat,
1.2% seems a little low, although a lot depends on what type of DII you're using.
I use IPN at 1.4% pretty much all the time.
I suspect you're a bit low, but my mate knows a lot more about which way to adjust than I do, so I'll check & get back to you.

from a use standpoint not really both used in mixes varing from 1 to 2.5% back when it was amyl nitrate but with the druggie issue on that impossible to get
the amsoil booster mentioned in one of the control line forums down under martin

Thanks 123cat. I've actually got plenty of 2-ehn (much the same as Amsoil AFAIK), but like to have some IPN also. If nothing else, it smells better! My general understanding is that IPN is a bit more potent; I use it at 1.4-1.5%, vs 1.8-2% for 2-ehn.
