Stuck with my Merlin - just refuses to start. Is there any way to find out if it is a fuel problem or something else

Did you visit cef, Cox engine forum ?

Merlin, get a litre of model Technics d1000 model diesel fuel.

Come back when you have achieved both.

With a legitimate fuel tank/system too.

If you are in Toronto, have you met up with the Balsa Beavers club at Centennial Park? Lots of guys there are into the stinkers, and could help. Might have to arrange times to find someone. Maybe also ask at AJ Hobbies for fuel. Arden and Jack.

Thanks. Tried calling i.e. BBC, their phone does not work neither does their email, so wonder if they are active? Would you know or know anyone I can contact in Ontario that knows about model diesel engines?

Checked, AJ do not sell fuel for model diesel engines. Looks like not many do or know much about these in Canada.

Thx, tried cef, no reply. My Merlin starts when I inject some fuel in the exhaust ports, but after a second or 2, stops, then when I try to restart, no luck. Happened a few times over the last few days

Hi ken,
thats odd, probably a time zone thing...

Go have a look now.....

Seems you have visited cef some time ago, it's odd you didn't think of asking on there about your Cox engine, perhaps you forgot...about the site, Cox engines are easily recognisable, pretty unique like really.

No matter, go have a look on cef again...you could enquire about model diesel fuel in Canada/USA...

At least the Merlin fires....a good sign at least...

Done - ggod suggestion.
Now, trying to figure out how to stop the Merlin engine remotely, someone suggested pinching the fuel tubing. Not sure how to develop this idea further.

Does this now mean the Merlin will run on the tank of fuel ?

Remember to tune engine by fuel needle AND compression lever. Never run it over compressed, a harsh unhappy sound.

alleays back off compression then increase until it sounds harsh and revs drop a bit, then back off for that happy faster running speed/sound.

Memorised ( write down ,) the settings for future reference.

It ran for @ 7 secs yesterday, still trying to run it continuous. Posted pics yesterday on Cox, did you see them?

Yes.

Any air bubbles in the fuel line and around back plate ?

Don't run over compressed, a harsh sound and drop in revs...

Tuning involves needle and compression screw adjustment...

Start a bit rich ( blurping sound ) and lean out for a two stroke firing, adjust compression until it starts to run with a harsh sound and drop in revs then back off compression for better revs and smoother running, back to needle for best revs etc...

Don't run it too lean or over compressed, fiddle factor but you will get there...

As said all spray bars I have have two fuel jet holes. Position your spray bar so you just cannot see jet hole/holes....

Remember to draw fuel up to spray bar by placing finger over Venturi and turn prop say 3 to 4 times to prime...maybe a tiny prime via exhaust port as well.

If on flicking engine fires with prop go forwards and backwards, it's over primed...

You will soon get the knack.

Don't use an electric starter, a spring start is much more convenient...

Also don't over prop...will come back later with recommended prop size....

Did this with needle in working position i.e. not fully closed.

Not sure what you mean by forwards and backwards
I added some Cetane boost for quickstart but methinks added too much. Wonder if I can compensate by adding some ether? Guess ether helps start stubborn engines, castor oil the opposite?
