Enua 4 strk diesel again

After reading the posts looking at the Enya 4 strk on the E***y which certainly has a glow plug growing out of the top. I decided
to make some phone calls to end the search and get some answers in order
Just Engines UK
Enya UK
MRC here (US Dist Enya) interesting enough Tim there ( Where Enya seems to take a back seat) really perked up on this one and stated he would contact them and see whats going on
I know Modelflight "down under" is working on this one too
Maybe with enough "heat" enya will spill the beans and provide an answer regarding when and if available martin

If you want an Enya 4 stroke diesel raise your hand and prepare your wallet. The scoop is they are made to order. They are expensinve. I don't have details on how they are designed or how compression adjustment is achieved. You have to wait 6-8 weeks to get one from the factory. But the price is a hangup. Who is willing to pay 400+USD for this thing?

There
are a few of us that would for this unique engine Peter Burfords little diesel is over $300 I think I could figure a way to do it It would cerainly be worth having if it works well , A golfer will spend a 1000 on a custom made driver I would sell a couple of my pristine condition irvine 40 diesels to get one ( I would have 4 left)and add a few more $. Would certainly need some more facts and pix first
however. I am quite surprised that OS has not given this a thought with the numler of 4 strks they sell the ratio must be at least 20/1 compared to Enya martin

Can anyone post a pic of this mythical beast, or a link showing this marvel?
Sounds like it's unobtainium ...
I'd buy one but suspect it's all just rumour.

Fiery/// This is beginning to appear like the search for the " HOLY GRAIL"; I understand the idea of the Lovonia cell ( I do not think that is correct spelling) and I can see this on a engine such as OS or Saito where the plug opening is rearward but have a hard time concieving this in an Enya with the foward facing plug - prop clearance???You have to use a remote lead on the glow plug now on them
I own saito, enya and mag 4 strks beats me martin

Ive been thinking about the pictures of the Enya 4st diesels that have been showing up on ebay , none of them are fully assembled , this leads me to think they have no variable compression and need the head shims/gsts adjusting to set the running compression with your fuel/prop. The glow plug is retained to assist cold starting.
This is nothing that we cant do ourselves with excisting 4st motors, my OS40 4st (pre surpass)will pop and blow smoke on FAI fuel without the glow connected so im sure it would run as a diesel , just need the head shiming to get a good warm running setting.

Stewart my enya 40 4 strk (open rocker) after a run on glow fuel, tried some diesel in it it ran (no surprise) as long as the glow plug was connected lots of smoke and not even close to the rpms on glow however
On an other tack might as well do it now. Cannot find a norvel 074 here. AJ Colholic said he can get one up there in Canada and will pop a conversion head for me too and then send the whole thing down martin

Stewart, I have posted this a couple of times but I don't know if you saw it, I ran my Saito .80 on Davis ABC mix and it has too much compression, in fact way too much. I can barely get it past 5,000 rpm and it makes unmerciful hammering sounds, it idles beautifully though. My Saito .50 on the other hand has high enough compression to run great at full throttle but will quickly cool off and quit at idle. It's close. Maybe the .56 is just right, I'll have to try it. When running the .80 on Diesel fuel glow heat is not required to start it.

Sounds like a lovonia cell (if spelled right) would be a quick easy fix on that saito 80 to adjust the compression no engine alterations

Laser in the UK used to do a diesel version of their .61. I remember one being flown in a vintage model at Old Warden.
If I remember correctly, there was a small cylinder with a contra piston installed fitted where the glowplug would normally reside. Once the compression was set, it needed no further adjustment & seemed very easy to start & handle & was very quiet. I dont think many were made but I don't see any reason why any other fourstroke couldn't be modified this way, subject to valve clearances due to the high compression & there being room for the cylinder/contra piston thingy.
Regarding the Enya, I agree that the reason for it being supplied partly dissasembled must be for shimming the head to the correct compression ratio for the fuel used - a bit of a performance to say the least. As for using the glowplug to start, if this is true, I think this defeats the whole purpose of having a diesel (or more correctly compression ignition) engine. Maybe it is to just bung up the hole? The whole thing to me looks like a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist & I would have thought a company such as Enya could have come up with a better idea, especially at that price.
Having said that, it is certainly an interesting beast & has provoked some discussion.

Mark Hello from this side of the "pond" With Enyas reputation I have a hard time thinking this would be DIY conversion some of us would not have a problem doing this but many would and most certainly with poor or no results in a good running engine. Of course
a glow plug is used in full size diesels with pre-combustion chambers but not in most direct injected diesels, It is most intresting since most 4 stks use a front cam and Enya drives it off the rear hence the front plug, and does not leave much clearance to the prop If they have the compression high enough prehaps a small contra in the front of the head would work and they could make the opening
larger for a larger unit to accept it for more volume which would allow fine adjustments. and the valve gear of course adjusted to make sure of no valve clearance issues, guess we have to wait and see, Jens Erik did a good job on his OS 4 strk conversion most of us do not have the skills of a machinist nor the equipment needed to do this Martin

Valve clearance/play are same as glowplug engine, but important the valves must not hit the piston since between the cylinderhead and the piston are small. Front, back or above (OHC) camshaft are not important.

Perhaps this is all a clever marketing strategy by Enya? Toe in the water to test the temperature. Create the interest, add a dash of intrigue and uncertainty, and everyone wants one. Mention of the Enya 4 stroke diesel was made in an Australian model magazine over 12 months ago, thereby stating the compression is "fixed". In my case, their strategy, if such is the case, worked. Like a kid in a candy store, I want one!!!. Shall I throw a tantrum, throw a "wobbly", roll around on the floor, hold my breath? Guess time will tell. Glen

Martin, to "throw a wobbly" is an aussie expression, meaning "spit the dummy", go troppo, or lose one's cool, or become agitated or become very upset. Glen

To GKAMYSZ's (Greg). Greg, I'm not backward in coming forward. Can you give us all the details, etc how you went about obtaining your engine direct from Enya in Japan? Glen

I think all you have to do is find an Enya dealer in Japan who is willing to order it. I have ties in the industry, so I'm not actually sure which shop it's coming from. A friend of mine made arrangements. I did not order from Enya direct.

Greg; Thanks, but it was worth a try on my part. Already have emails going everywhere trying to track down a supplier. May have to wait to see what response Martin gets back from JE (UK). Thanks again, glen

Glen just hit the Enya UK site . They show 16 engines 5 of which are diesels 11.15.25 in rc/and stunt (c/l) carbs and really "talking them up" Although no 4 strk diesel yet they are showing a new 2 strk 40 glow that looks radically different than the SS40 the model is
40ZX they are showing prop recs from 10x12 11x9 12,5x7 in a 40 GLOW . Wow would this make a conversion, my point here is they are coming out with new engines. It may not be too long before they pop 41 4 strk as a diesel my guess using the new 40 2 strk release
as an example looking at new markets With the glut of 40 size 2 strks thats pretty gustsy to come out with an other which will only sell if really better than most and it looks it.
It looks like with that new 40 2 strk glow that is about $200 US it has to be good almost up there with Jett price wise, but if that good
it will be grabbed up it thus follows that the 41 4 stk diesel will be the same case. At least it shows Enya is willing to spend money
on Rand D for new engines martin

Martin, Have my heart (and probably my pocket) set on an Enya 4/ diesel. Have convinced the wife it's the next best thing to sliced bread and would hate to disappoint her! Have emails going hither and thither overseas. Still waiting on ANY reply. Emails don't go in a straight line do they. Perhaps the replies can't follow the curviture of the earth to "down under". Still waiting with bated breath. Glen
