Default Diesel wakeup call

Ok guys this is not directlly related but a noticed a new mag out today called diesel , trucks and cars, many conversion pics jeeps, pickups etc, write up on diesel Liberty It gets the Idea across here in the USA we are behind the times on dieselpower. The had a history page in back and showed a pix of a rather large Bellanca 1927 sort of beaver looking with an aircooled radial diesel cost
3 cents a mile to operate (ok multiply by 10 to get current) they were made by Packard and even 3 were installed in a ford tri motor
in 1929, Mr Packard was really pushing this but was killed in a plane crash from an ice up and the whole thing went down the drain
and now, or end of 2005 FAA approved a diesel for light plane use. Maybe we will see a renewed intrest in diesel model engines
in a year or so martin

If you read the conversion articles these folks were fanatics spent gobs of money and time but now very happy campers humm
sound familar

In spite of the heavier weight, the demands placed upon an aircraft engine really do fall in line with the capabilities expressed by a Diesel engine. Low rpm, constant speed, etc. Keeping the fuel in liquid form in cold weather could be problematic.

Aircraft diesels run on Jet-A, so fuel gelling shouldn't be a problem.
