WELL HERE IT IS After a new piston and liner , note old davis head finned the screw holes are 90 degrees apart most likely fro a different OS since screw holes for a fore and aft installation note the 45 degree offset but still a perfect fit of insert in cylinder

Martin,

at least its been proven too many times that it doesn't matter how the fins are positioned the head will do its job. It just looks 'odd'.

Martin

Many years ago I had an MDS 3.5 cc aero diesel. It's head fins were like that from the factory. I regret trading it. Heavy, but powerful.

The prop wash spirals around the engine. Arguably the orientation of the fins as shown above is, if anything, better for cooling.

well group operation new p/l installed operation a success but patient died
issues
1. engine hard to start need cranking with electric starter, the compression is great can adjust from over to under with screw
2. will run only between 6000-7000, and rough no idle throttle no effect whether 1/4 or 3/4 open
3.the new liner is flanged site on top of cylinder original flush ( davis head still perfect fit notice head sits on flange head not flush up about 2mm my other one is flush
4.Piston new one has a hole about 1/4 inch round below wrist pin, installed with this hole opposite exhaust, slot in cylinder perfect line up with exhaust outlet
5. porting slots were different in cylinder than one that was removed
6.this was a brand new setup in original pack from OS marked 10FP p/l
7.It appears a few varients of this engine 10FP, 10FPS. 10FP b and 10FP BX
8. Ain't breathing right

Ideas????? martin

What was wrong with the old piston and liner?

If you put up a picture of the liner I could compare it to my FP engines if that would be of any help.

Mr Cox here it is note 2 pix to show all ports no flange on top just inserts flush with top of crankcase top no port hole in piston below wrist pin
It is worn compression low

And if the engine is cowled?

Nah, Ithink that if angled was best it would have adopted a long time ago.

This piston and liner is for the old OS Max .10 FSR (1980's) It is not compatible with the newer OS .10 FP.

Control liner THX guess the quest will go on, at least now I have an answer mystery solved martin

Tried a stunt Bob Davis suggested using a tubing cutter put a thin ring in the piston this of course raised the edge giving a tight fit in the cylinder, was putting in a second one and broke off a piece of the piston skirt gripping it was quite thin had a tape wrap and holding with a plier, too bad think it would have worked to restore compression martin

Martin,
At least you now have a spare P/L for the 10FSR that you got awhile ago. Spares never seem to go to waste.

RE: TT10 MAX FP

Dennis quite true did not use my head on this one, the piston skirt was quite thin should have put in some plaster shoved in a piece of dowel, as a holder ,let it harden, with then cut the ring , put
in some boiling water to get rid of the plaster, clean, and would have been fine martin

The Thundertiger GP .10 piston and liner will fit the OS .10 FP. I've done it. The TT liner has a thicker nickle plating than OS too.

Yes, that is the FSR piston and liner with iron/steel construction, here is the part number for that one;

I have done that on other engines and it doesn't last for long, only a run or two. After that you have a groove for the oil that could possibly help but I haven't see any difference from before.

RE: TT10 MAX FP

Ok all decided to give this an other shot put on bench,no muffler does not fit due to clamp down nut primed, hit with starter instant light off , died too lean, finely at 4turns open, that is a lot, zinger 8x4 ,10600, then 10,70010,800-10,900 would not hold 11K this is the new p/l will check for air leaks around carb 4 turns out alot or just a querky cab bot now a happy camper with this beast, compression awsome martin

control liner just checked the label that was on the OS 10 liner #21303000 and reads 10FP top flange on liner thats what in the engine and it works martin
