Muffling diesels
 

I have only ever owned one diesel with a muffler - an Irvine 20 - and it was noticeably quieter than a similar size glow engine. How is it with the smaller engines? Does the performance suffer a lot from using a muffler? I like quiet models (which is why I fly electrics) and with proper noise reduction I might be able to get away with flying an I/C model in otherwise noise sensitive areas. IIRC correctly the PAW 55 with stock muffler and perhaps an extra muffler can be VERY quiet. Is this true? To some extent the added weight and performance drop can be compensated for by todays light R/C equipment.

Michael,
Diesels are generally more tollerant to muffler back pressure , lots of users put longish lengths of plastic tubeing on the muffler to direct the exhaust crud away from there models and report little if any loss of power.

Try one of the Mills .75cc clones - Irvine, or K-Mills, or the Russian one from Carlson. Or if you can find one, the MP Jet .04 Classic, another sideport diesel, is very quiet. Most of the electrics that I've come across, apart from the small ones, are noisier than these diesels. Switching to glow for a moment, the Thunder Tiger GP07 is very quiet as well.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the Mills are hard to come by around here and extremely expensive. Ordering from the US is not a good option since I have to add shipping, local sales tax and customs fees. I have placed a bid on **** Germany for a PAW 1cc R/C motor - it should be possible to machine a collector ring for that so I can mount a muffler.

hello- you can get the collector rings right from paw.add a piece of plastic tubing to it and it will quite it down alot:D

I have a thunder tiger 10 davis head in a 50 inch span vmar cub designed for a 400 electric geared motor it is QUIETER than the electrics if you go back a few posts its there I fly it at a electric field and the guys were stunned by its quietness (OS 10 takes same head)
