Is this engine anygood???
 

I saw this on the MECOA site for 39.00 its a MARZ - MAP3 .15 I was thinking of putting it in my sig shoestring C/L. I have never messed with Diesel engines. If its a good engine do you use pump Diesel??

I've tried to get a sticky on this thread several times. The mods don't seem to think that the basic knowledge for diesel is important enough.

No, it does not use pump diesel. Read up on fuels and techniques here. The MAP3 can be a good engine, but quality is said to be variable. I would take it apart and make sure it is clean inside before running it. I had both diesel and glow versions. They ran well on the bench, but I never flew them.

You can not use pump diesel. I would suggest commercial model diesel fuel, at least until you learn to run diesels.

I have two MAP3 diesels. The one with the natural aluminum fins needed some "tweaking" to run. It had a bind that I fixed by adding a thicker backplate gasket.

It has a muffler which I removed and reinstalled upside down to maintain tolerances during break-in. This allowed easy exhaust primes during break-in.

When I first started it there was almost NO compression. Instructions said to move the contra piston down until it just touched the piston at TDC, then back off 1/2 turn or so. It worked. The engine started and compression increased for the first half dozen short runs.

I initially used a 9x4 nylon prop which the MARZ handled well, even though it is a rather short stroke engine. After a dozen or so heat cycle runs it is ready for a plane. It runs good and starts easily. What more could you ask for.

I have two of them, one is a very early serial number (931) unmodified one - came with original Soviet box, instructions, etc. and is the one I've run. It needed to be cleaned of swarf before running. Compression is beautiful - as good as any other diesel I've run. Its performance is similar to my CS Olly or a good PAW 249. For bench running, a Taipan 9x4 seems to be ideal.

My other one is the Australian modified variant with the muffler. (The muffler, and the glow versions were a mod by the Australian importer of the Marz - if you see either then you know you have a Marz that has been down under). I haven't run it yet.

I see no reason why the Marz wouldn't be a perfectly acceptable 2.5cc sports diesel, and for the price was good value. I haven't flown mine yet, only bench run it.

one marz left me with the crank apparently fatigue broken in the same way as described in the reference. It happened on a new engine after only 2 hours of bench running and actually the crank went into two pieces while hand starting!
