Don't get caught up in the premise that adding a bigger engine to an existing airframe will make you go faster.

Look at what this model is doing with a .40 cu/in engine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM3nL4KdEqA

The QSRA planes are giant scale and do require massive engines with massive HP but the engine must be matched to the airframe in unison and proportionately or you will gain nothing.

The Diamond Dust and Shrike are not being manufactured any more but they are out there if you look for them. That is why it is very important for us speed flyers to have a stash! Heck the whole Lanier line is gone now. I damn near cried when they closed up. The Lanier 'Predator II'' ARF was a fine speed plane also.

lol you said "Don't get caught up in the premise that adding a bigger engine to an existing airframe will make you go faster."

No this will not but it will make your plane faster. yes in some cases your plane will be slower with a bigger heavy engine. here is a video of my revolver 46 size with a 120AX in it.

here is one of my LR1 with a Jett 35 FIRE in it.

Modified SIG WONDER is powered by an OS .32SX engine. Also OS .35AX engine with APC 8x6 prop works.
Model weighs 2 pounds, 12 ounces. 110+ MPH.

How about a SIG Kougar or King Kobra. They are plenty fast and very easy to build.

A Revolver with a Jett 60 LX HP would whoop-ass all over a O.S. 120 AX. Smaller/ faster. I guarantee it! I don't even think the Revolver airframe would handle the Jett 60 LX. Well maybe for a while!

Think in terms of power not displacement.

We can both agree on one thing.....Big Bruce rocks!!!

There are many claims of speed in MPH but to have it documented with a doppler audio file is a defining factor. The little "How Fast" gizzmo is also a great device for resolving truth from guesswork.

I am not saying that a bigger engine will not necessarily make your plane faster. What I am saying is that there is a point of diminishinmg return when there are more appropriate engine options available. You can take any 40 size engine and do some sneeky porting/timing mods and still have a 40 size engine with 60 size power. You can also do the same with a 60 size engine and bolt that same engine right back in your plane and get another 20+ MPH out of it with no change in the engine's physical size and weight and no change in CG.

Airframe configuration and parasitic drag are a speed freak's greatest enemy.

You guys want to watch a speed video??? Check this out. This will make your bag shrink!

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=...t=0&FORM=LKVR7

Listen to the driver ( Andy ) call out the speed and notice that when he calls 450 MPH his next call jumps to 700 mph in just a couple seconds. This is an example of mounting massive engines to a vehicle with great success but this vehicle stays on the ground...thank God!

I have a SD I'd give to the right person for shipping. I did the basic framing and said to myself what the heck am I doing... I have 60 planes to fly I don't need this. Make yo a great deal on a MVVS front intake rear exhaust .40 with pipe too...

I don't think the Screamin Demon or Diamond Dust are available.

speedy lol put the crack pipe down lol

have you even flown a 46 size revolver yet alone one with a 60 LX in it. I by the way own a 60 LX and i know this engine very well and what it is capable of. I will also tell you that there is no way a 60/56 LX in a Great Planes revolver will be faster than one with a 120AX.

The revolver is a big draggy plane. It is over 6.7 lbs even with a 60 LX you might just might get 115-120 with a 10x7 prop but doubt it. My revo did 145 on GPS.

You see on certain planes where weight and drag is all ready high you need thrust with high pitch this comes from a larger prop.

No you would be correct if i was to run a Q-500 with the 60 LX and one with a 120AX the 60 LX would out perform it by a long long ways.

So I will challenge you to make a revolver put a 56/60LX in it and then see if you can break 120 with it. ok

By the way run your wave scope or what ever it is and tell me what my revolver was doing in the video if you can get a reading.

here is another video no dives....

airraptor,

No crack pipe here!!

Jett 60 LX? I have 2 of them. They are both FIRE and have the HP modded porting for higher RPM. A beast of an engine in a 40 size package.

You and I think alike but use different words. Here is my thoughts on the Revolver/O.S. 120 AX controversy.

I see your point addressing the bulky airframe with power and heavy pitch. I agree with you on that! We Cool?

My point is: Why try to get 120 mph from a bulky airframe ( Revolver ) in the first place?

I know....this is a hobby and we like to experiment and have our fun!

If I want 120+ MPH I just approach the task from a different perspective by choosing a slick model and a different engine setup.

Kinda like the Gee Bee R1 comparred to a GR7 or Proud Bird.

HEY!........instead of getting into pi$$ing match here I can offer some help on the Doppler file for getting your "factual" speed recorded. There is a site on the web that you can download your audio file and get the speed reading yourself. Let me look for it and I will post it here for you.

FOUND IT!!

http://66.163.168.225/babelfish/tran...e.htm&.intl=us

This site has been translated into english. The original is German and it was a pain in the butt.

P.S. I am a very competent flyer and can fly anything you have unless it is a helicopter. I have had absolutely no luck with "egg beaters"![:'(]

Look at some of my planes in my RCU profile. This is just a fraction of my lifetime slideshow. Pictures of planes I have personally built and flown BEFORE I either crashed them or sold them! I'm 55 and have been flying anything attached to a transmitter or C/L handle for over 40 years. I know this proves nothing because I know some guys that have been in the hobby for 50 years and still can't fly!!

http://www.rcuniverse.com/community/...ry&memid=97338

I can lay claim to one thing for certain...I have never touched a crack pipe!! LMFAO!

I don't need "crack" to act crazy.

BTW...I have a completely different definition of what "crack" is! You and I might have to get together so I can explain my definition of what "crack" is! Regardrless...any form of "crack" can be very dangerous!

not really a Pi$$ing match lol

I like a challenge sometimes. yes its easy to get some planes fast from the start.

the revolver balances correctly with a 90 four stroke. most of those are the same weight as a 95AX or the close to the 120AX so i said why not lol. I have built for of them so i know all the week areas of this plane for sure. Yes I have been flying for a long time also since 1978.

To the OP there are a ton of planes out there for great easy speed projects. If you find one you like post here what your thinking and we help you get where you would like to go with it.

Just to let you know the GP Little Toni will not do 120 with a 60-95 size engine. and a 120 will be lucky to get 110. The fastest one ever was with a OS 91 DF engine and it only got to 150. you could put a YS 115 in it and get 130.
Mine has done 118 with the 95AX and 12 x 10 APC prop, stock muffler, that is still running way rich, not broke in yet. So I think 120 is well within it's sights.
I've got the Eagletree speed recorder (uses a pitot tube). Can't wait to see what it does when I prop it up a bit to 12 x 12 and tune it with a pipe.[8D]

I'll let you know after I repair the damage my landing gear did to my wing on a muffed landing. (I hate fixing leading edges)[>:]

bigger what rpm you running. The 95 i have will spin a 12x8 APC at 13,500 but I think its a bit tired as I thought it spun it faster than that.

Didn't check it. Ran a 12 x 8 on the bench, don't remember what it turned that at.

airraptor,

It is a Lyle Larson Dago Red Q40 kit. It came as an unfinished fiberglass fuse and composite wing. I did the build and the paint. Here is one of my other paint jobs:
