Dominator 500 prop size
I have built a dominator 500 as a cheap plane to get into more speed planes. I am using an old OS .45FSR on it, for the first flight I used a zinger 9x6 prop and I dont think I was getting over 60MPH. Can anyone clue me in to what size prop I need to use to get this plane moving. Thanks

RE: Dominator 500 prop size
There are lots of props worth trying. We race similar planes with the O.S. .46fx, first off switch to an APC prop, here are a few worth trying.
APC 9x7
APC 9 1/2" x 7 1/2 N
APC 8 3/4" x 8.25 N
APC 8 3/4" x 8.5 W
APC 8 3/4" x 8.75 W
APC 8 3/4" x 9 W
APC 8.8 x 8.5
APC 8.8 x 8.75
APC 8.8 x 9
APC 8.8 x 9.25
I have used all of the props above in our local racing class. Some work betters than others, but it really depends on the day. I would shoot for a peaked RPM around 15,500 and play with the props that put you in that area. If you plane is heavy (3 lbs 12oz or higher) stick with the props with no more a 8.5 pitch

RE: Dominator 500 prop size
I picked up a few of the APC pylon props today and am going to try them tomorrow. With the 9x6 prop I was getting 14,800 peak RPM's with the stock OS muffler.
daven, what time do you guys usually start flying when your at the grass field? I did a little pylon racing at the old SPMRC field 12 years ago, and would like to get started again.

RE: Dominator 500 prop size
T-man,
I did not notice you were from Minnesota.
We will be doing a little practice Sunday afternoon around noon to 3 pm.
14 something with a 9x6 sounds pretty low. I know a lot of the APRA guys are taking that prop up to 17,000.
We have a race this coming Saturday with O.S. .46 FX engines. If you wanted to fly the FSR in our standard class you would be more than welcome.
I have a Dominator as my backup for our club races. They fly nice and are reasonably competitive.
