I'm open to trying anything once and fun things twice. I talked for a while with Dub Jett today and ran him through the set up. I'm going to give his suggestion a try but I did order an extra spacer just to be safe. Getting a gold muffler shouldn't be a problem if I'm sad with the performance.

So I will still need need the second spacer unless I move the engine, which I am seriously considering.

Well, I put the second spacer in due to moving the engine would have put the tank WAY above the carb centerline. I was running the engine in on the airframe and tuning it when the throttle stop backed out and BAM the engine stopped. Jett 76 ingested the spring from the carb and locked up solid. Off to Texas it goes for repair. Gives me time to build the SD.

Once I found the cause of the sudden stop there MIGHT have been a few choice words.

Yeah, the crank won't turn at all. It does make pretty paperweight though.

The bigger engines / props can rip the firewall off when something like this happens.
I'm surprised to hear that this is unfixable.

Thanks to the wonders of CF and laminating resin the firewall is unscathed.

I did manage to disassemble the engine tonight and get the piece of spring that was locking things up out. It took a bit of doing but thankfully I found that pulling the liner gave just enough room to pop the rod off the crank and remove the piston.....then a little (ok a LOT) of pressure and the crank slid out. I will have to do a little polishing on the crank but I think she will live again.

Looks like it was due to corrosion and rust???

Actually what you see is castor residue. No rust or corrosion. The spring it ingested is what had it locked up solid.

Look on the bright side - you could have added a trick oil channel that will give you 200 more rpm.

It's a pretty insulting way to stop an engine that is spinning so fast.
Imagine the strain on every moving part.
Hope it isn't a total loss. That crank looks unbreakable..!

It looks ok, going to run it on the stand and see. If its toast then I drop back and look at my options as its an old engine and the rod is not available.

411 the VQ Dago red is a .46TS / .70FS. class, hardly for a 1.15 or anything close. I have two and this plane is NOT built for much above either recommend engine structurally. I put in a .91FS and it was literally shaking it apart. VQ's are pretty, BUT the materials used are 2nd class. If you're hell bent to use that YS1.15, better get a far better plane from a far better Mfr. VQ's are made for smooth running 2 strokes. Vinh Quan's son's "Phoenix" brand models are made a bit better, but cost more.
