Call Dub and have him build you one. It is no secret that he builds some of the best racing engines there are. If memory serves me, you must sustain steady idle below 4000, so be sure to tell him that so he can tailor the port timing for you. His engines run beautifully on a full length pipe, and the carbs are metered to not run too rich in the middle. If you have never run one, you will be pleasantly surprised. I run all of mine on custom carbon fiber pipes, but Macs pipes will do you well.

The 91 LX will not run gold times
Question though why are you wanting to go with the two stroke? The YS115 will get the number for you and the 91 size ducted fan is bulky and sensitive. All last year there wasnt a single two stroke in Gold in the past some guys ran the OS 91s but switched to the four stroke. one was talking about trying the OS91 again and if your dead set on the two stroke I will see if is going that route again. We do have a race coming up in April here in Sacramento and would be awesome for you to come race with us and then can see the format and how the race goes.
Either way you will enjoy this type of warbird racing.

Jeff.... I don't think you can even compare an OS with a Nelson motor.... I fly Q40 with a Nelson turning over 25k on the ground.. The same OS 40 size motor couldn't turn 1/2 that.... The Nelson 91R like to run at 22k and will swing a 9.75x11... I believe that will run with a YS115

Scott, You might give Bob Violett a call, and see if he knows anyone who might have one for sale. Same thing for Henry Nelson. I'm inclined to believe that you could have a competitive approach? Good luck on your project.

I race Q40 also and I will be in phoenix. The OS 91 I am talking about is the Ducted fan version which is in the same power out put as the Nelson. The nelson if I remember correctly were made for BVM and they made a 96 and then a 105. Rossi also made some DF engines.
The 9.75x11 I don't think will be the right prop for these planes. You will need to run 550 square inches of wing. The pylons are 700 feet apart and there are only two of them. Think of two number one pylon type turns with in 700 feet. With that prop it will not have enough time to accelerate. Not trying to talk you out of it but trying to help.
If you are dead set on the two stroke DF engine I would look for a OS 91 as there are way more of them out there and there are more parts out there too. In the world models planes there really isn't that much room in the fuselage for the pipe and then run the fuel tanks.

Mark Summich from the Bay Area is the guy to talk too as he used to race those engines but he switched to the YS 115WS

Here some pictures from the Nelson 91 R and the Nelson S. The R has 1 little mark on the liner the S 2 marks.

I have around 50 engines from this type in my hobby shop plus spares.

The prop 10x10 or 9x16 ar far to big.

8x12 size and min. 22 000 rpm on the ground you need for a good performance.

Never use the orginal pipe. It is quite but has to much restriktion for the engine. A open OPS pipe with 30 cm from glow plug to the biggest point a the pipe are good.

MJD I think a 11x8 carbon might be the ticket if wanted to mess with warbird stuff but why do that why the YS115 engine provides all the speed and power you need plus it pulls so much better in the corners.

I guess this must be one of the more bad-ass DF engine options for the die hard two-stroke racing fan. What about the OPS 20cc Bimetal..? Oh yeah, the price.

You got me wanting one of those 115's now darnit.. no more engines I said.

I have no plans to race anything, but this kind of bird looks like fun to me. I got one of speedracerntrixie's Macchi 202's as I think you know, and it is on the bench this winter. I plan to fit an OPS .80 in there, alas with external pipe but I'll at least polish it up. I came to the conclusion from various advice - yours included as I recall - that I was likely building a 160-165 mph sport racer. That's fine with me - interesting engine, interesting model and not the usual fare.

For this engine and aircraft speed range I figure a 10x8 would be about the right shaft load and a better match in terms of pitch speed. I'm prepping a master to mold.

I don't know, an external pipe sounds kind of hokey to me. You need to use a carbon fiber pipe if it is going to be exposed..... Shoot me a PM.

MJD I have one of his planes half way done also I and i think it would do 190 pretty easy with a YS 115 in it. I have so many projects that I have started many and havent finished any of them lol The BVM/nelson was like the other DF engines and around 5-6hp in the 22-25,000 rpm range. The BVM 96 is the good one although rossi made a 105DF engine but not sure how strong it is. You can have any of these DF engines making the same power as the OPS engines so dont go way out of your way to find one lol. By the way according to APC's power calculations which is where PE got his data from the YS is making over 6 hp turning a 14x14 prop at 12,500 rpm. The YS engines are readily available too. you will like shawns macci as it flies well and lands easily
