Default P-51 Mustag

I have a p-51 Mustang kit that was given to me as a gift. It has a 36 inch wing and calls for a .051 to .10 2 stroke. I was planning to put a os .25 on it. Is this plane any good for a speed plane or is it too draggy? I was thinking however, if it would make a good speed plane, I could put th RX21FN Novarossi .21 on it. The .21FN puts out 2.2hp at 34,300 rpm. Its a hot little thing. Not as heavy as the os 25 and twice the power. However if the p51 is not a good plane to use I am open to opinions as to what plane to use!

The P-51 sound cool, but if you want to go faster than the P-51 and still be able to land at a slow speed just mount that .21 on the back of a Kavan Projeti. I've got one with a .25 norvel on the back that will take an equivalently powered shrike's lunch money! If you get my drift. Who sells that .21 I may want one for myself. If your P-51 is the Herr kit than you've got a good plane, but its not quite built for the kind of speed you may have in mind. Pica makes some nice 1/12 scale war birds that would be a great match for a hot .21 or .25 engine.

You can do a search for Novarossi and you will find a lot of places with them... the trick is to find the ones for airplanes. Novarossi is more well known for the boat and car jobs but they do sell airplane engines too.... one place you may try is http://planethobby.com

I've got an old p-51 combat with an OS 25 FP and it does about 100-110mph level. Should go fast with just about any of the motors you listed.

34K? Sweet! Do it and tell us what happened? It is not the fastest plane out there but I always say "fly what you got"

P-51's can be made to fly quite fast

Of course... you'd have to appropriately beef up the airframe to handle the larger engine. If the structure is made for .051 to .10, then the .25 or the racing engine might pull it apart.

You say its a kit.... not worked on at all yet? How you go about it can make a huge difference in how it handles high speeds. (and how fast it can go due to drag)
