Check the beginning of this thread...Snoop Doggy Bag glassed his fuselage and monokoted the wings and Blade47 (Peter) 'koted the whole thing. Peter loves his. He's on vacation right now but I'm sure he'll be here next week to extol the virtues of his SU

Don

He guys, Hows it going? Been very busy,Flanker is still 80% done sitting it the closet but flying all my others. I did'nt read anything up to this page but I used that method which should be in here somewhere involving that miwax waterbase stuff but you need to spray on some of that Deft lacquer sanding sealer if you go this route since the water base may warp the balsa. It did work good because you did not have to wait a couple days to sand between coats, only a couple hours

Why do you think this plane is available as an ARC?

Apologies lear31A, it was not my intention to infer the kit was available as an ARC...I will immediately kick myself in the posterior! I wrote 'ARC' as I was used to seeing it that way. The AK-Models site had an ad for a 'one only' ARC...the one used to create the construction book and I bought it.

No worries. I immediately called him to ask. However, it would be a good idea. Good luck on your kit!

What a BLAST.. I have been outside on holidays for two weeks and was able to visit 2 Hobbies stores in Edmonton and 4 in Calgary ..man what a difference to SEE what you need in parts and not just look in a catalog ...I found what I needed for the bigger 1/8" control horns for the SU ...cant wait till I return Monday ..I have the rest of the week off as well so I can finish up my mod and get back to some more test flying.

How is everybody doing on there build? and any more test flights?

OK guys,
I just purchased an SU-27. This thread helped me to make my dissicion on what jet to replace my Greatplanes F-4
Phantom with. I lost it last year due to a dead battery. It was a good flying plane , but the top speed was a little slow.
I like the look of the SU-27 and it seams to be a fast plane. I will be reading this thread again for the good mods listed .
thanks to everyone for RC Universe.

I saw the Flanker on eBay and went to the AKM web site to take a closer look. Then I found this thread and read all the good things Rich had to say about the kit and flying characteristics and that did it. I ordered the plane. this will be my first prop jet but I have flown numerous planes for over 20 years. I think I can handle the speed as I have a few fast ones in my hanger (Sunray and Lancair).

As for a paint scheme, I am going with the Russian Knights scheme. Tom Nelson sent me the address for his web site that has plans for a "foamy" version of the SU27.

http://www.foamyfactory.com/jets.htm

Thanks Tom, I will send these off to get vinyl graphics made. I will let you know how they come out. Looking forward to taking a break from my scratch built staggerwing project to build something with instructions. I should get my kit some time this week.

BTW, I will be posting some pictures of the SU-27s in the Gallery on my web site soon. Stop by and check it out.

I'm pretty sure that your being in Belgium and Vic being in Maryland, the two planes won't show up on the same flying field. I think you are safe.

Ahhhh...okay, then they get should get together and decide who will be the lead and who will be the wingman and one puts a "1" on his plane and the other puts "2".

After all, it is a show TEAM.

heheheh

The box is on the FedEx truck for delivery! I will get it sometime today. I'm anxious to see this model and get started. I have been working on my Staggerwing (from plans) so long that I am just burned out on "scratch" building. I have built numerous kits of various complexity and quality (Sterling, Pica, GP, Top Flight, SIG, etc). This should be a breeze with the manual and CD and this thread.

I wouldn't exactly call the building process a "breeze" , but with the help of the guys on this thread it can be done. The covering process begins!

Looks like you are well underway Capt G. I just got started and picked up some of the hardware today at the LHS. They did not have the Nylon Torque Bearings required in the first step. I ordered them from tower so I'll have to wait before dry-fitting the elevator.

BTW, I am kind of a scale guy so I have been looking at a bunch of photos of the Flanker. I noticed a "patched" area on the starboard side just below the cockpit on most of the planes and was baffled as to what is was. I read some documentation on the specifications for the SU-27 and it turns out that is where the 30 MM gun is installed. I guess they painted it black so it would no show the blast marks from the gun. Just some scale info...

It was nice to see that Alex from AK Models in and reading this thread ... hope he has picked up on some of the mods and building adjustments that we all have made. Maybe he will leave a post next time by.

Got started on the Flanker and after the epoxy bearings, the kit is a breeze. I have not fabricated epoxy bearings before and my first effort was a disaster. I tried the wax paper method as described inthe instructions and had expoxy driping everywhere. So I built a little dam from scrap balsa and all is well. Here are some pictures of the rudder bearing. I used 1/8 inch wire on the elevator and fabricated an epoxy bearing for it as well. I will be posting more picture of this project on my web site forum if you wish to follow my progress.

I Fly!

You may also want to extend the epoxy bearing ...when you get to it ... in the bottom Fins ... this will extend the bearing and reduce flex ...this is a good mod by Rich.
