OK guys - here's what she ends up looking like. Just needs to balance and final gear adjusting etc. Hope to maiden this weekend. Weight now is 8 lbs.
Wow! Looks great G !

Maybe I should finish mine up in the same colors..... I kinda like the color scheme anyway!

Hey Blade,
The F20 is packed & ready to go
I live about a 1/2 mile from the beach so how 'bout plenty of white sand & a volleyball net or a cricket bat & tennis ball for a bit of beach cricket..

Tony.

Quick question, would this model fly without Rudders? I use to have a direct connection F-18, and currently fly a GP f-14 and after the F-18 I said that I would never put rudders in the model as I never use them. Your help is appreciated.

Im sure you could get away without them.....

But for me as a pilot, the rudder control is pretty important. On the DC F-18 they were effective control surfaces, and very useful in cross-wind situations. Also worked very well during aerobatics - slow rolls, point rolls, wind correction and such.

There is no real reason to omit them on the SU-27. Improve the bearings per this thread. Not hard to do.

Although I think this plane will do an axial roll without rudder input, I still agree with Bob in that you may need them for other maneuvers. Jets don't typically perform stall turns but, how would you make corrections to get the plane going straight up to acheive a good loop? A slow roll is really beautiful when done properly with rudder input. I think you will severely limit yourself and the plane by making it a 3-channel version (that even sounds bad).

I hardly ever use the rudder when landing (concentrating on other stuff). But sometimes I do when landing a cross wind. With this plane coming in hot, I don't think it will be necessary - but I certainly would want the capability if required.

That's my 2 cents....

First flight was a disaster. Took all the runway and all the elevator to get airborne (out of trim) but trimmed up hands off for a couple circuits. Then the engine sagged big time (hole in muffler line) and while maneuvering to land it went in. Broke the nose off fwd of the canopy and damaged the aft end etc. etc.. Will repair eventually but in the meantime the stuff is going in the Cermark F-16.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Capt. But it sounds like it's repairable.

As always, it is dis-heartening to hear of a mishap of a plane you are building. I am still forging ahead with my Flanker build and hope to have a successful maiden and future flights.

As Alex said in the builders manual, check everything and then check it again before the first flight. We all get excited and pushed into getting the plane in the air for the first flight. In our haste to SEE the plane actually flying, we often overlook or minimize the importance of small problems that are noticed before the first flight. I have done this many times. After checking everything you can think of, you bring the plane out for the maiden and bypass a few problems just to get the thing in the air. For me, this has resulted in a "near miss" of a fatal crash. The best thing to do is put the plane back into your car/truck and take it home and fix what does not work perfectly. As they say, "if it does nto work good on the ground, it will not get better in the air".

I will post more pictures of my model as I get closer to the maiden.

Good on U there Vic keep going ... the weather up this way is starting to show colors of fall ..we may have until the last weekend in October to fly before the snow hits the ground Brrrrrrrr.. [][] I have logged another two flight on the SU since the flutter problem and it is awesome to fly ...and ... the problem has not returned ... unfortunately ( or not ) I split my flying time with my other two planes but look forward to getting in a least two more flights before I clean it up for the winter [&o].

I do have my Cutlass project on the way and looking forward to modifying the Strikemaster this winter as well ... going to do away with the "v" tail and put a "T" tail on ...also hope to drop another pound or two of it as well.

What other projects have you guys lined up for this winter? ... ( I know that some of you are months away from winter and others may not even see snow ....LUCKY you [sm=thumbup.gif] I may have to move some day )!!

Cheers

sorry to hear of the crash.... There is not a lot of margin for error with this plane and the setup is vastly different than typical propeller powered planes. There is not as much carry-over in knowledge from a straight wing planform to a swept-wing plane.

For example... typical elevator throws for most planes is around 1/2" from neutral to full up and neutral to full down for a total of an inch. This plane needs AT LEAST 2 1/8" from neutral to full up and 2 1/8" from neutral to full down... THAT IS A TOTAL OF 4 1/4" EVEVATOR THROW!!! It flys very comfortably with this set up with NO EXPO!

Also, lateral and longitudinal balance are both more critical!

It is a super-stable plane in all phases of flight.... my plane has been very sucessful.... please send me questions so I can help get more flying!

Rich

We can rebuild - we have the technology. Time is divided though building a Ziroli P-51 , the Cermark F-16 (for the Sukhoi stuff) and the new GS P-47 is due soon. Plus keeping the rest of the fleet in the air (see gallery etc.)

I pick up mine at the Post Office tomorrow!

My winter projects are a G&P pusher F-18 (.91fx) and a midi-fan RBC EDF F9-F Panther. The Flanker will probably be done by October.
