Default Patriot XL - Final Assembly, Covering

Patriot XL, Jett 90L, Robart Retracts, Metallic Red & Cream Monokote, 8 1/2 lbs.

Well guys I am at that stage of covering this project. Finished the fuse except for triming: stars, pinstriping, etc., and ran into a snag.

It seems the 2nd roll of metalic red monokote which I ordered along with my Patriot XL kit from Tower Hobbies is a reject. Not only was the coloring off but there was a defect, large blotch of nothing, in the material in the center of the roll. I sent Tower & Top Flite an email and I am sure they will stand behind their product.

A minor delay but here are the pics.

Including interior pics per request: Setup also includes Futaba SR10 (for the dual elevator servo's), amplifiers on the flap & aileron extensions because of the length, 1000 ma battery pack in the rear hatch.

Good looking color scheme. Can you post pictures of the interior?? I'd like to see your set up since I will start on mine pretty soon. I plan to use Spring Air retracts though.[:-]

looking very good, did you make two extra hatches back there? now you have three? Can your battery fit in the aft hatch area? It looks like its in the front hatch area. It's a real drag about that roll of covering. Keep us updated. RV

Geez, the interior looks like Bangkok traffic. Should I expect to modify and put everything in the back if I plan to use OS 91FX (24.3oz) since it weighs same as your Jett 90L???[:-]

Hey RVBlack:

Made a front & rear hatch for easy access to the components. The 1000 MA battery pack is in the rear hatch along with 4oz of lead. The front hatch contains the switch harness,
Hobbico battery indicator, plane locator (ha ha) if its lost, (2) Y harnesses with amplifiers for the long lead on the flaps & ailerons, & of course the retract tank.

Thanks,
kf

Nice work Frank! Considering the amount of stuff that's going in there, you got a good installation of your gear...neat and tidy.

Hey RV:

The kit comes with two snap in place hold downs that wrap around the tank. I CA'd them in place anyway!

Received new roll of monocoat from Tower last week and the XL is covered. In the process of trimming.

Thanks,
kf

So you ca'd the AIR TANK to the wood tank holders. Can the tank take the vibration?

Hey RV:

This kit supplies a form fitting ply cut-out for the tank. If you look closely at the interior pics you can see the ply holders around the tank. They slip into a slot in the form fitting cut-out and lock into place.

Just CA'd the holders to the form. Tank is secure!

I have the spring air retracts, it has a smaller tank then the robart. I had to modify my tank holders so my tank fits. It fits snug but if I don't glue it to the wood holders it will most likely vibrate out. The holders are ca'd to the fuse, should I ca the tank to the holders or use another type of glue? RV

A while ago I posted that my XL had a hard time leaving the ground. Since the weather is getting nicer, I was able to test the new set up. I spaced the front gear down about 3/8" to give a better stance on the ground. I shimed the rear of the main retracts to pivot them forward. It now takes off with ease. It also flies much faster than my Cermark F20. I am running a 91 FX.

RV:

I have used silicone to secure my air tanks in the past and have seen many others. Try using some foam under your tank and lock it in place with the silicone. I'm sure you will work it out!

It is almost level. Maybe a touch nose high but almost nothing. Sure makes a difference.

Kamakazie Frank, Your Patriot looks very good. What size prop are you using, how much grass runway does it need to lift off, and are you using flaps with the recommend throw. I'm at the final assembly stage with my XL project. I would like some more info to know what works and what does'nt. I will post some pics when its complete. I can't wait. RV
