have you busted 200mph???
Well revvers I've been meaning to ask this for a while now and with the inspirational topics posted by slomo777, it has come time...
who here in bretheren has busted lets say 185MPH.. I mean legitimately, to me it doesn't matter if you put it in a power dive and pulled her up into straight and level flight..( and I dont mean "oh yeah I know what 170 mph looks like, so I was doin at least 190"..type of stuff..actually verified on radar , telemetry etc)
I'd like to hear what you did it with, what engine and all the rest..you guys know the drill..rpm, exhaust system, prop, plugs etc etc etc..
I've given myself the challenge to bust 200mph.. probably would have to come out of a big dive..but I have trouble imagining any other way to let it all unload and get there... I know the guys from Europe would probably laugh at my target.. but as most of you are aware..I know stuff all about making planes super fast..so I need to go through a learning curve to make the target achievable..and to wear my revver #
I don't want to afford the dedication thats required to get to 250MPH or more..I'll leave that for the experts and extreme enthusiasts so my target is more modest but not conventionally easy!
cheers...and rev on!!![sm=thumbup.gif]

I'm going to try for 180 this summer with a K&B .40. I will try it with open exhaust and also with a complete tuned system. I will start out with a 8x8 prop to feel out the plane and then move up to a 7.2x8.6 for the speed runs. I feel that the European format of diving into a 200 meter timing zone [660 feet for mph] is good enough criteria. I will use walkie talkies and a stop watch, that's good enough for 99% accuracy, especially after several runs.

RE: have you busted 200mph???
hey combat,
That sounds like a good challenge..it is particularly interesting with your choice of engine..I have recently bought a NIB Irvine 40 RE which came with a bolly carbon fiber tuned pipe..cant wait to hear what that 7.2 X 8.6 prop will turn ..the instruction sheet with the Irvine is a bit vague but it does suggest 7 X10 1/2 or 7 X 11 prop for speed applications...unfortunately I cant find one of those the closest I can find is a 7 X 10, but I'd be surprised if it will turn any serious rpm
all in all I like the sound of your project.. hope you reach your target..it's a real buzz when you achieve a set goal,

Hi guys. I am new to this speed thing sounds like a hoot. I'm building a 40 size shrike hoping to hit 150 mph as a starting target. what kind of engine exhaust prop stuff do you think would make this happen? Thanks skyflyer

RE: have you busted 200mph???
I have never seen 200 mph verified with one of my planes, I have seen it with similar planes. In racing, diving doesn't win races, its consistent level flight that I try to do.
Your basic well setup q40 (picture in my avatar) will do mid 180's flat and level all day long with a 7.4 x 8 pitch carbon prop on a Nelson Q40 turning 23,500 if broke in and set properly. These props are set for turning, so they are not made for all out speed, I am sure I could go faster if I was just looking for all out speed.
I was recently at a race where they had a radar gun set up with a large digital display so you could see the speeds of the planes as they came into pylon #2. Speeds ranged from 180 to the low 190's pretty much all day long.

HAVEBLUE, have you tried STEVE WILK at ELIMINATOR PROPS? He might have the prop that comes close to what you're looking for. His biggest 7" prop is an 8.5, but he has 8" props that go up to 10, I would just cut one of those down until the target rpm was reached.

I have no proof but I belive I have. In comparison to the Magnums, D.D.'s, and .91 powered srikes we have it appears I got a good 40+ mph faster with my twin, sounded great too.... If it wasn't 200 it was very close....

Yo Bro Blue:
Have seen over 200 frequently at the unlimited's but not about to invest $10,000 on my own. You may get close with your Animal and Jett 50 after a dive. We dont have a radar gun yet, I dont see anything I have created over 160 as my interest is to go fast and turn left within club engine rules, at least not in obvious violation.

RE: have you busted 200mph???
200MPH? Not yet. I'll be working my way up this season though. Right now, my only flying speed plane is a TT 46 powered Viper. However, I do have couple more in the works. First is a custom painted [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3483476/tm.htm]Kangke F3D[/link] that I purchased from Jeremy Ferguson. It should be showing up at my front door any day now. Will be powered with a Rossi 40 or Webra 50 ( haven't decided yet, and would appreciate opinions). Also, now that the Christmas bills are paid, I'll be ordering a Lyle Larson [link=http://www.calspeedpros.com/Q40.htm]QM 40 Vendetta[/link] within the next week or two. Already have the Jett 50 ( with black pipe, of course ) broken in and waiting on it. The Vendetta just might get me in the neighborhood out of a dive.
Sound like a plan guys?

This man is a local guru in my area & I myself bowl to his skills, a master, Sid Clement who broke the 200 mpg barrier. Sid is not in the picture but holding the radar gun.

Jett FIRE--50X powered Whiplash
"My Whiplash made it to 205 MPH today. These were down wind with the radar gun in a stand and switched to transmitt locked on, and top screen max speed recording. The specs are as follows:
FUEL, Magnum YS NZ/DZ-20/20.
Plug, YS 4 stroke.
Prop, APC 9-8
Wind, 10 gusting to 20 MPH.
Time, 2 PM EST 11-24-02.
Humidity, 50%, Bar pressure 30.08,
Temp. 52 degrees.
On ground RPM, 17,900.
Radar gun, STALKER Split Screen.

17,900rpm with a 8" pitch prop. 205mph in your dreams. Do the arithmetic. That prop at that rpm gives you 134.6 mph. theoretical speed. That is ignoring all prop inefficiencies and airplane drag. Must have been some down wind!

You beat me to it Ed,
I was giving them the benefit of the doubt of 18000 rpm's and I came up with 136 mph. I think the lower number on the radar gun is more accurate with the tailwind.

RE: have you busted 200mph???
Yep – with a small engine (modified .21) + correct sized CF prop
Do we need engines with lotta cubic inches and HP for our 200 mph target, or is it more a matter of sophisticated aerodynamics?
How fast arguably would be a Whiplash with identical .21 engine?
questions over questions....

Still waiting to hear the results of that experiment Der.
I like what he has done, he just needs to put something in the air. Even if it crashes, he will have learned what to do on the next one

Just reporting the actual facts as it happened. Don't know what the Jett uploaded too in the air but HaveBlue wanted fact not fiction and that is why there was a radar gun there to record the speed.

194.7 to be exact on the radar gun.[X(]
And that's with the dive stuff not flat and level.
Rossi .90, McCoy plug, 20% nitro.
It's not 200mph but I'll take it! Every Saturday![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]
