Default WM P-51 Maiden flight success

The Rockwell yellow with OS 55 had three fantastic flights! It seemed faster than anticipated and turned instantly without loosing speed. Trim was near perfect. The engine was mounted upright to keep it cool and to eliminate flooding, idle and dripping problems that can happen with an inverted carb that far below the fuel tank. It ran flawlessly no hint of lean sag in the tight turns due in part to the fuel system (I’ll explain another time). The Master Airscrew trimmed to 10.8X8 S-2 turned 14,000 and unloaded a boatload (got on the pipe) in the air. My last landing was engine on with no headwind and used less than half the runway. Greased every landing and touch & go.

It could not have gone any better

....I have a WM Dag Red myself...just about my favorite plane. Flies on rails,
never snaps or does anything nasty....glass smooth landings, doesn't stall. [8D]

The only thing bad is the plane is pretty much the same color on both sides, so you
have to keep a keen eye on it.

That is easy to fix go to you hobby shop or a vinyl graphics place and pick up some colors for the bottom. Stick it on and be creative. Checkers never go out of style

There's a 4" wide black stripe running front to back near each wing tip on the bottom. I will do the same on the top but it will have florescent red 3" wide with 1/2" black borders for a total width of 4". I did the bottom just before the test, glad I did because that yellow turns into a blur in the fading light. I will need to have the top like that so it's easier to see it going around the pylons and the callers can distinguish it from another yellow plane as I intend to race it in bronze class..... Or silver?

OK, OK, Kmot! I was going to hold off till I had all the decals on, but you couldn't wait

Sorry they are so dark, the shine of the spinner caused the camera to close down a bit.

That reminds me: A warning about the World Model spinners made for the P-51. I saw the Tru-Turn and saw the price, ouch! The Dave Brown was cheaper but the W.M. was only $22.00 with mounting adapter..Cool. Or so I thought. Just for giggles and sh**s I put it on the balancer and got the shock of the week, WAAAAYYYY OUT of balance! If I had tried to uses it as was, it would have torn the plane apart. The spinner and back plate needed attention. After the fix it was mounted and it spins true and smooth. I think this spinner comes with the Dago Red so check it before use. Moral of the story, you get wat you pay for.

....I got caught in a dust devil (miniature tornado) out at El Mirage Dry Lake....

....it went straight in, full throttle from about 200 feet up....toast.

I bought another one the next day.

I take it this didn't just happen?
There are some cool ways for a plane to terminate and that's got to be one. I hope you had witnesses.

Yup, that's the same spinner; I recognize the adaptor in the cut- away view.[&:]
You know, the only thing good about a crashed plane is you get to see the way the plane was built from a totally different perspective[:-]

....LOL....no, it was about three years ago. The thing that bummed me out was bustin'
about 4 of the tiny fins near the glow plug. It was a NOS OS .90 FS that I had saved
for a long time....it was a sweet runner. []

Nice project !! looks great.

AND ... its refreshing to see someone NOT affraid to cut a friggin hole in the cowl so the engine fits !!! [8D][8D][&:] Very well done, nicely fit up.

[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

(I replied to 2 P-51 and one Sundowner email yesterday ...... what is it with people not wanting to cut a hole in the friggin cowl so the engine and exhaust fit properly ...?)

I can't count how many times I just threw the cowl on the bench and ran it without.. Of coarse, that was before my quest for speed...
