Default New Whiplash pics!

Thanks to Ken Hutson (khutson) at AirbrushFX I have a bit nicer looking Whiplash than the last one.

He said he wanted to paint it, I told him to do what he thought would look good and then I went on vacation for a week.

Well, this is what he came up with. I was awestruck when I saw the pics, but when I picked it up I was really amazed...these pics don't do it justice, and they are pretty dang good! Wait until I get the goods mounted in it and get it into the sunlight.

Looks great, but what about the weight?? Less than 4 ounces!! of paint and that is amazing. Ken flys planes so he knows about adding weight, but to see this thing up close and then weigh it, man that is the mutts nuts.

So how about some pics??

This is just an attempt at a shot of the 3D detail on the busted chunk motif...I think he was paying homage to the chunks I busted out of the ground with the last one (those of you who read the "Test Flight" post might recall Ken was the one who posted the dirt cloud pics!)

The colors just don't show up in these pics, but the blending of reds and oranges in the chunks and flames is, well it's better than I did with a can of Rustoleum and some 3M Fineline!

Personalized elevons...

And let's not forget the name of the plane!!

I'll get some better shots in better light, I just got home and wanted to post a couple of pics before I put the gear in it.

that looks really good, what's on the bottom?

I've got the Canadian/American flag one coming, but I think it's the same top and bottom, probably a bad choice for something this quick :stupid:

It's just white with (5) black stripes about 3" ~4" wide. The center tunnel is black, the tips are black, and then a black stripe between them on either side.

Are you guys still chewing on that...???

Get your act together... and just wait until the official investigation is over about all the falsified and fabricated "evidence" that was presented to the UN high counsil by your "intelligence" agency....

I just love the odd political statement every now and then... you are welcome to continue this discussion in a more private manner however... no need to get into it right here...

Chuck,

That look awesome man... talk about a personalised plane...
My cousing was into airbrushing in a big way a couple of years ago... I don't know if he still has te touch, but I'm considering to let him have a go at one of my planes... Maybe the new Magnum I'm building...

4 ounces of paint on the entire plane... well, the man obviously knows what he's doing...

Default Paint job

Chuck,

All I can say is that is one very fine looking model airplane.

Next time I crack up my HotSpot I'll have to send it to your buddy for a paint job.

If this one also decides to delaminate and the elevons are ripped off, at least everybody knows they are his elevons...

If you got the can-am scheme, then you have the same one I do probably.. It's only painted on the top, and a white underside.. Mine showed up VERY nicely in the sky!!

These elevons won't de-laminate..they are solid hard balsa sheeted with 1/64" ply with 6 Robart HD hinge points per side.

That's good to know. From looking at ACM's site it looked like they were showing the scheme on the bottom as well, I didn't see any cutouts or fins on it so I assumed bottom as well. Glad to know it's just white

Default Stuffed and buffed!

Well got all the goodies in it. Heavy T-Storms this evening so no test flight or outdoor pics.

I mentioned the aileron mods..what I forgot to mention was they are also 1 1/4" shorter each, moving the outboard tips in a little more to try to get out of the tip turbulence.

This one is toting a 1600Mah NiMh instead of the 1000Mah, trying for a little battery life and for balance. The ailerons as it came were a little easier to move, they are very free now so the 1000Mah might have been OK, but as I feared this one was not as tailheavy as the first one so I needed to larger battery to balance.

Talk about tight..with a 1600Mah battery, full-size 8Ch RX, Thro & Mixture servos, and 2oz tank in the radio compartment, there isn't any free space. None.

I'll start out with the 9X8 since I know how it flys, then go to the 9X9 after I get it trimmed. I'm taking a differently timed engine with me to the field and might give it a try to see how it handles the 9X9 as well. 4 nuts and an allen screw and the engine pops out, leaving the pipe and carb on the plane. I can change engines as fast as most guys can change props.

Never happens to me..I recruit an unsuspecting person to do the honors of chunking them for me. That way their eyes and ears take the beating while I stand off to the side and fly.

And the test flights were just fine and dandy. No trouble, no flutter. Just 100+ degree temps kept us from putting in more than 4 flights, just too hot and windy for much enjoyment.

And no head ons coming home this time..but I did get stopped by a coal train crossing the highway for what seemed like an eternity just a few miles from the house. It was about 100 yards from where the head on was last time. Some bad karma in that area LOL.

Well, I thought you did a fine job! At least as good as "El Presidente" the phantom P-47 jock
We never hit the ground, or even came close, so that is just fine and dandy by me.

Gotta remember we were launching into a crosswind the rest of the flights, and it was coming from the right...the Whip wants to torque to the left so the cards were stacked against us. Also I was down on power from the heat...now way was it gettin' it like the day I crashed at ARKS.

Thanks for posting the pic...taken about 1/2 second into the very first flight.

The guy taking this pic, as well as the "amazing dirt cloud pic" is David (and I know I'll spell it wrong) Reighly. He always seems to get a great shot!

Chuch, I missed the thread about the aleron tips. Looks like you just shortened them up ???

Let me know before I prep and paint.

Ps- the whip looks great. I am on the phone with an airbrush buddie as we speak.

What type of paint and clear coat should I use ???
