Picco .80 FIRE pattern engine

Hi guys. I'm finally out of surgery that will only keep me from flying a few more days.

The good news: A friend is offering me an engine I have no expereince with. It is a Picco .80 FIRE PATTERN engine from the 80's. It is in a .60 case, same size as my Rossi .80. It comes with a header and pipe, all from PICCO.

Anyone have a comment regarding using this one for a speed sport plane? I would like to get around 14K on a 11x11 or close to 15K on a CF 10x12. If not, I wouldn't get it as he is asking some decent bucks for it. It looks almost new (probably is new) and has a ton of compression.

Please advise.

Regards to all,

Where do you get 10x12 CF props?

MJD:

I got them a while ago. Should be able to trace their origin. They look like Rev-up's. I'll check tonight and let you know. I would be interested in getting a few more myself.

They're too much prop for a DF timed engine, but for big block sport/pattern engines they seem like they could be useful for small fast models.

Exactly
I am using them on an airframe I designed, with a YS61 and a Rossi 80. I'm getting consistent 150mph passes with the YS. The Rossi turns them 2,500 faster, but I haven't been able to fly it yet.

The nice thing about this airframe is it can fly for longer times (using a 12 oz. tank, 5%) and it can house FPV hardware. Really an incredible experience. It should be doing 175-180 with the .80

That sounds like good fun.

Have you tached that prop on the NovaRossi .75? Just curious.

There is mumbling about the NR61F "speed" FIRE engine on the pattern forum, currently being evaluated. Not really a speed engine, but like Webra, OPS and whoever else uses that term loosely, a higher timed sport engine. IIRC peak hp at 18K. Big block engine (i.e. >600g) though.

The Rossi 75 moved it at 13,500 with std muffler. I would have to try it with a pipe.

the speed version of the r61-c motor has been run with a 10x6 on pipe in excess of 20k rpm http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...1842147&page=2

That's where I saw the reference. NovaRossi's website suggests peak hp in the 17's. So a higher pitch 10" prop might be the ticket for sport flying in overdrive, at least for smaller cleaner airframes. Will be interesting to see the numbers once the evaluation testing is complete.

So back to the original post. Any of you guys have an opinion regarding the Picco .80 RE (pattern)?

Do you think 30 more mph with a 2,500 rpm increase?

Same as your Rossi, I think it will make it's peak power around the 13K to 14K RPM range. Back when those two engines were in, the pattern guys would set them up to spin big props around the 10K range. They were just starting to get noise sensitive and the best way to reduce noise was run lower RPMs. Running a 12X12 or 13X12 on that engine was common. You can get to the 14K range by running a shorter pipe and smaller prop. As always getting the most out of the setup will require some experimentation and will end up being a combination that has the airframe, prop and pipe working together. Not much unlike a car where the gear ratio, cam specs and car weight are considered.

I think it's reasonable, using a 12 pitch prop. Maybe even a little bit more, the 12 pitch will unload more in the air.

a 12 or higher prop uloading will only happen if its a clean plane.

Absolutely! I designed this airframe specifically for speed.
