Sig Kougar

Has anyone matched the sig Kougar with an Evolution .60NX and the optional tuned muffler. I know the Kougar is not a great airplane for speed and I don't have the need to go ballistic. I just want an everyday sport flier that's reasonably quick. Projected speed? I'm thinking maybe 90 mph + or minus?? thoughts?

I have a Kougar with a Rossi 40 coupled with the Evo version of the Jett muffler and have recorded 110 MPH on a GPS device along for the ride. The Rossi is a brute for a 40.

It's a strong one. On a 10-7 APC hauls a Phoenix 7 ARF with authority, lots of vertical. Top speed likely in the 90+ bracket, not clocked.

Now on a Screamin Demon with a 9-10 - boogies along.

you will be in the 110-115 mph with that engine with 10x6 prop. the 9x8 might give you more but I think it will be less. a 55AX stock with jett pipe will get you 115 o a 11x7 prop

Nothing wrong with ballistic. You can go there if you wish or not.

JT Hammer 10-24-2015 05:20 AM

True. 'Ballistic' is subjective to the flier. 90 mph is ballistic to some , but dirt slow to others. I had a Phoenix Strega a couple of years ago with the Jett .50 . This was a great combination and had the kind of speed I like. I never did find out how fast it was going, but I am kind of hoping the Kougar with the Evo '60nx would be similar or a tad quicker.

airraptor 10-24-2015 09:50 PM

the couger will be a bit faster

JT Hammer 10-25-2015 01:00 PM

The thought just occurred to me; I have a thunder tiger Pro .46. Suitable propped, how fast do you think it would go in a little Sig Kobra?

Weasel Keeper 10-25-2015 04:45 PM

Easy 100 MPH or more but, 120 would be quite a feat with any of the Kobra/Kougar air frames no matter how much power you throw at it.

MJD 10-29-2015 05:42 AM

Big fat thick wings hold you back. Thin the wing on the Kobra and put the .60NX in it and hold on. The TT Pro .46 on an APC 10-7 would be a strong power package but with stock wings the drag brakes are always partly "on". Same motor/prop apparently good for 130-ish on a Q500 airframe.

That's all you need right there.

Same idea in the back of my mind for several years as I have similar components and was thinking along the same lines. GarySS has some nice ideas incorporated into a Kobra from this thread that I think would transit well to a Kougar. I'd also like to thin airfoil down as MJD suggested - have to build up wing, mod existing cores, or cut new ones...

One of my many doodling projects is a speedy version of the Kobra. It is only roughed out in CAD at the moment, it'll be time to dive into it sometime down the road.

Speaking of Q-500 and doodling, here's a sketch I drew up some yrs back to try and "beautify" the rather stark and generic looking box airframes associated w/ Quickies. Wanting to stay simple and was thinking of deepening aft fuse, adding boxy jet fwd style canopy and turtle deck. incr rudder area to extend below horizontal stab, tail wheel, fake belly scoop, wheel pants, cowl, and spinner. Now, I think I'd thin the airfoil too.

Would be interested in seeing other's doodling projects...

Love it, massaging Q500's has been the subject of many casual sketches.
