Which engine for GP Viper?
I am planning on purchasing a GP Viper and am wondering what the best engine would be for it. I have an OS 46 FX, GMS 47 and Irvine 53 but have heard a lot about Jett and Rossi engines. Will what I have do just as well, or will I need a Jett or Rossi? If a Jett or Rossi, what size/model? I obviously want as much speed as possible out of this plane (minimum of 120-130). Thanks in advance for any input.

Well- :D
You want as much speed as possible? If you are serious about that, try a Nelson, MVVS GRRT, or a ducted fan engine like the OS-46VX or a K&B 7.5...120-130? Yeah and then some ;) If you want a powerhouse that runs out of the box and that you can use on many airframes in the future- The Jett is the obvious choice. The Rossi-45 is a beast but kinda heavy for a Q-500, a Webra-50 is also a great sport engine to stick on there... Is there a price range, fuel preference, or future airframe we should consider? I have both the Jett-50 and Rossi-45, and I USED to have an Irvine-53 (great engine!) but those 2 are a step above the Irvine when it comes to revvin! Keep us posted! james |

This is a good start for speed, without breaking the bank....$189.00
from Morris Hobbies....nothing extra to buy....or fiddle with. Just bolt it on and go ! :D The Rossi .40 Quickie engine..... ....here's what they say about it.... Q500 Rossi .40 inlcudes backplate mount and Quickie silencer. No porting or mod's needed, just bolt this engine on your Q500 Airframe and you are ready to compete against MVVS Q500's and Dub Jett's Sport Q500's in the "District" Class. Turns above 18,000 rpm's in the air with an APC 9x7! For use on a closed course for competition purposes. Also used when extra power is needed for heavier jet-like planes or when high speed applications are required. Bolt this engine to the forward swept V-Tail V-VECTOR Q500 Race Plane and bring home all the trophies in your class! For expert flyers only. __________________________________________________ ________ I would think about one of these....just to get the hang of it....then maybe later going with the full blown Jett, or Nelson racing engines. When you plant one of those racers at 150 or so....the engine is usually busted in half....[X(] Dave. :D |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
The engines you have will get you in the 120 mph range with the right prop. Considering that plane comes with an adjustable back plate mount, you can use one of your existing engines, and if you want more speed you can switch later.
I have no idea if you plan to race this plane, but if it is solely for Sport use I would recommend the Sport Jett .46. If you check the Hangar Sale at www.jettengineering.com Dub typically has them on sale at $220. Still a bit more than your average sport engine, or the Rossi, but it is a very nice engine that you would be extremely happy with. The Jett should get you close to 160 mph on the Viper. |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
My suggestion would be to buy the Hobby People Sonic ARF, and strap on either one of the motors you have.....and then HANG ON! The Sonic flies great with standard motors and will get you the speed your looking for. It's also 20-30 bucks cheaper. It's not, however, a "V" tail.
You'll find many varying opinions here on the "higher end motors". Start with a 110-120 MPH plane, and then come talk to us when ya wanna go ballistic! lol :D ;) Gary BTW, I used to have a "Hobbico" Viper, is this the same plane?? I flew the snot out of that one for years!! |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Thanks for the replys. I will look into the Jett. I think this plane is almost the same as the Hobbico one mentioned.
|
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Would a Jett 50 be a better choice than a Jett 46? Would I need to make any modifications to the Viper to handle that powerful of an engine?
|
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Razor,
Nice scat cat! I'm finishing up covering my fith one right now. I'm hanging a jett super sport 40 on it for rocket performance.;) They fly so nice with the semi semetrical wing. |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
This Viper is quite a bit nicer than the older Hobbico Vipers. I have not seen one of the newer sonics, but I still have one of the Modeltec ARCs that they had out several years ago. They are very nice flying (similar to the Skat Cat) but the airfoil is not quite as agressive as the new Viper or Predator. Great for Sport flying, but will struggle keeping up with most of the modern racing airfoils.
For a sport plane, you can't go wrong with any of the Q500 planes available today. Stick with your current engine, and upgrade after you get bored (if you do) 120 mph is plenty fast compared to most planes out there. You might be suprised. Daven |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
What plane would you recommend instead of this one for speed? Keep in mind I want and ARF and no delta wings.
|
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
I think the Viper or Predator are perfect. I can't think of another ARF or kit that would be better. Sure some of the landingearless planes will be faster. But a standard Quickee will give you nearly as much speed, but be much more forgiving in terms of take offs and landing. I also think they fly better.
|
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Yep...
Quickees are just very nice sport planes. They are cheap, can be had in kit form or as an ARF, either way they go together easily, they fly very smooth, they can go fast AND slow, they generally have wheels (unless your landings still need practising :p), they will perform well on a sport engine and they will be pretty fast on a racing engine... faster than most people can handle for a first speed plane anyway, ... So to keep a long story short: you can't go wrong with a quickee for a first speed experience. And you know why this is? Because quickees were conceived as a beginners racing class in the first place... makes sense doesn't it... |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
I'm waiting on delivery of a GP Vipor right now. It should be here by Teusday or Wed.
I'm rebuilding a used OS 46FX with high speed bearings and a ringed piston and liner. I've got a Macs tuned pipe and header for it after I get it broken in. That ought to be plenty of speed for a beginner at speed planes. Even here at 6000' above sea level, I think it will be plenty fast. If I like it, I'll slap a Jett on it later. I don't think I can race with this engine, right now. I believe all the races around here limit engine size to .40 |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Well, I ordered a Jett Sport Jett 40 with a Super Sport 40 muffler. Dub said this would give me power equal to the 46 and on a good day, close to the 50 while being very close to legal to race with, I would only need a different carb. Dub was VERY helpful and took the time to find out what I wanted/needed and to give me a solution that would fit those needs. If this engine is anywhere close to what people say about them, I may be hooked on Jetts for life. Great company and excellent customer service.

daven ....
....is this the "Old Viper" ? It's an ARC....I got it at an r/c swap meet for $40.00....couldn't pass it up....:D |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Yes, that is the older Viper with Conventional Tail and Low wing. The new viper is completely different, with a V-tail and High wing.
Good flying plane, but the quality was a little inconsistant, and most of them came in heavy (compared to most kits). Well worth $40. |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
I just changed my order to a Jett 50 with a standard muffler. Will the GP Viper 1-be able to handle the speed, and 2-will this engine fit on this plane? Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.
|
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
The .50 will be fine. Its the same case as the .40 and .46 so size is not an issue.
I don't believe the sport .50 will be as fast as the Jett Quickee or Nelson .40 engines. However, it will allow you to fly at speeds other than full throttle. I have a Jett .50 on a .40 sized kyosho Spit, and its a ball to fly. |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
How about an OS .50sx? It's only about .5oz heavier and has .2hp more than an OS .46fx.
|
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Greetings from Ramona to Alpine! Is there enough room at the Alpine field to fly DF? (Always lookin')
Anyhow, the OS is a great engine but not in the league of the Jett-50 ;) |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Hey Dave,
If you peek in that Viper box, you'll see you have some options on tail surfaces. V tail, conventional, or raising the stab out of the wing airstream (forgot what you call this) This is how mine was. Gary |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
T-Tail
|
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Razor,
You young whipper-snappers think you know it all, eh?? LOL Thanks |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
I don't remember the Old Viper giving you the option to change tail configurations??
I know the doddger had instructions and parts to build either conventional, T-Tail, or a V-tail. |
RE: Which engine for GP Viper?
Im also getting the viper 500, but im getting the gms .47, would that be a good engine for the plane? I dont want to get much over 110mph maybe more. Im also thinking about a .61 gms engine, would that fit? also would it be to heavy?
Thanks |
