My new Patriot
 

I've finaly bough a Patriot :D

It's been built from the kit, just needs a little work doing to it to bring it back like new.

I've fitted a Rossi 53. What do you guys think?

It's not ready for flight in the pic's (Exchaust not fixed to plane etc), guess I just couldn't wait to get a pic of it :D

congratulations Flash, thats one cool looking patriot, especially with that anodised? pipe and with that engine sounds like it will kick along very nicely indeed.:D

I gave up trying to get one of these downunder..got a few other projects on my plate aswell ..so maybe down the track a little one might crop upsomewhere

I made a mount out of some wood to hold the rear of my Rossi pipe. When
you put the wing on, it holds the pipe. :D

is that a plastic spinner i see in the pic?[:-] get an alum one, we had a guy lose 1/2 of a thumb when his plastic spinner broke....[:o] (NOT good!)

That's a clever one Dave... I like it... simple but effective.

The pipe on the Pat looks like one of Just Engines' purple pipes, they look nice... too bad they are baffled (Hatori copies) and not of the double cone type...
But still, when properly tuned that Rossi should haul the mail.

....but the valuation of the Euro cause the price to go way up here in the states. [:o]

Yeah it's a purple pipe.

Still haven't run the engine up yet, still have finished it.

I do plan to get a alu spinner, soon as possible :D

Sorry I don't have the plans, just bought the airframe.

Fi Flashman- Congrats on getting ahold of the best flying prop.jet around... The Rosi-53 should be a beast on there--- I also recommend alum. spinners but have used plastic just fine even with a Jett-50, for safety sake the Alum is superior-

What prop. is that? I recommend a 10x7 or 9x8/9x9 APC---

At the moment the prop on it is a APC Pylon prop 8.75 * 7. I was tuning the engine last night, it's still very rich but it's revving to about 17,000. Is that about right? My Rossi 40 will do 17,500 on a APC 9 * 6

I was about to go for it's first flight yesterday but it had a very small problem, so I hope it's first flight will be this weekend.

Fi Flashman, you go and buy the Jett that I was going to buy of eb@y, you then get a patriot and have the nerve not to fit the jett!:D

It's a very nice Jett, I'm holding it my hand now... it's so shinny and Jett like :) I'm putting the Jett into a QM40 pylon plane, it's already got the mount fitted for the Jett, it would of been a shame to change the mount when I had the perfect engine for it.

A guy from our club was selling the Patriot, I believe that it's the only Patriot on the Island, but I could be wrong [8D]. It's sorted now and ready for it's flight and I can't wait. ANyway I think that the Rossi is a good match for it, what do you think?

Patriots seem to be rare this side of the pond, so I can believe its the only one on your little Island:D
I found one last Christmas that someone had built and then was selling (lucky for me) but since writing it off in a mid air, I've had to resort to building a new one from the kit (a task I don't go a bundle on as I prefer the time scale associated with ARTFs)......but anyhoo, if I want a good plane, I'll have to make a sacrifice somewhere! Mine flew very very well on a piped 46FX - (till I over cooked it :eek::D)....then an MDS 58 would you believe. I'm sure the Rossi will rock it! Do you have retracts? Mine didn't, and I eventually took the fixed gear off and made a dolly. Although I doubt belly landing would do that pipe any good, even if it is purple :D

Cheers for now.....best of luck with the maiden. The Patriot has a vast flight envelope...got mine to slow down to walking pace with relative high AOA, but the high speed is also very satisfying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine has go retracts, but they are mech retracts and it's a problem for the nose wheel. The wire is bending very badly. I'm going to replace the wire with thinker gauge.

I'm going to maiden her with the retracts down, I'll sort that little problem after I know that she's worth it :D

PS you really do want a Jett... They're lovely, it makes you giddy just looking at it... My Precious

Yes, I would like a jett....may get one for my Patriot when it's ready, but for now, I've got too many other things to fund and get flying! :)

I just purchased a used Patriot 40 off of Ebay a few weeks ago and put it in the air for the first time today. I was very disappointed at the lack of speed. I was anticipating this thing screaming across the field but didn't really fly any faster than some other sport planes that I have. It takes the entire runway to get it off the ground! As a matter of fact, my Hobbico Sukhoi w/ O.S. 91 flies faster than my Patriot w/ Magnum .46 XL. Does anyone have any advice on getting this thing to really scoot? I'm running a 10x6 nylon Master Airscrew prop at about 12000-13000 Rpm. What's a good tuned pipe that will fit this engine and how significant is the power that I'll gain from a tuned pipe? Would a larger engine and larger prop be worth it?

Use a 10-8 Master Airscrew and some 15 or 20% nitro. ;)

The MA prop should be exceeding 13K easily.... They turn more RRR's than their APC counter-parts.

If I am being completely honest with you, I would pull that magnum off ASAP and improve the powerplant- I have flown a Patriot with an ASP-46 which is basically the same thing as the magnum you have and it was lame- Not worth piping in my opinion....

If you do not want to spend the money on a Jett-50 or YS-45 (if you do then that will fix your problem :D) then look for a Webra-50GT, Rossi-45, or OS-50SX in the swap shop, attach a 9x8 APC to it and watch it go. The Patriot with the OS-50SX and Tower Muffler flew great and was plenty fast, same as the Webra, the Jett is the ultimate on the 50 sized class though...

TOTALLY different airplane with a better engine up front, trust me... ;)

Right on, James....he needs 14K at the very minimum. A Guy at our field had a
piped OS .46 FX, and the darned thing screamed....I din't know what pipe he had
on it. A 9-7 Zinger is a good prop too. The MAS will usually provide high rpm, and
won't break if you get a little rough with them. :)

Dave always gives sound advice... You could run a MACS pipe and boost performance quite a bit, but they are like $70 bucks yes? Plus the hassle of setting it up, and retaining it on the airplane (wing saddle area-) I bet you can find a decent engine in the swap-shop for under a hundred...

I agree the Zingers are good props. also---

The only MA prop I used came from Daves recommendation and guess what? He was right... Generally I like APC's though :D

I sold my OS-50SX and put my Jett-50 back on my Patriot where it belongs--- My other one uses the Webra-50GT and scoot real nice!
