Got my Second Prop Jet

The first one is still in kit form :D This will be my practice jet, Sportmans Aviation F-20, so that I get used to flying one of these, the first one is a Juno F-20 that I will be building in a few months. Any input on the S.A. jet, how does it handle, like I said this will be my first prop jet, power will be SK-50.

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

I have the SA F-20 and there are a few threads on it. But, it's a great plane! I have around a hundred flights on mine with an older TT .46 and put a fresh TT pro .46 with a JETT muffler. Even though it has a fixed gear, it's still fast! I clocked it at 132 with a slight tail wind in level flight. It flies like it's on rails. Very smooth. Very strong. You may want to lock the rudder out like I did, because I read that they like to flutter at high speeds. The only thing you'll have to get used to is the speed, just stay ahead of were it's going!

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

Hey Joe! Welcome to the speed forum... (Your name seems familiar so maybe you have been in here before--) Those F-20's are sweet! (From what I have read- I am a Patriot guy, you know Ford vs Chevy :))

I would seal the hinge gap on the rudder and give it a chance before "locking it up" as Set mentioned above-- Flyboy Dave posted on one of the F-20 threads about the vertical hinge line causing the flutter problem compared to the Patriot or others that are at an angle 7 deg. or so...

The Sk appears to be a great valuye but I am not familiar with it- once you get used to the F-20 you might decide to explore high performance engine options like the Jett-50, YS-45, Rossi-45/53 Webra-50/55 etc. or you can bolt on 1K with the Jett Stream like Set did--- 9x8 APC maybe?

If I were you I would do a search on the F-20 and grab a cup of coffee- Make sure however, that you disregard ALL posts by "Vicman", he has an F-20 but he is a crazy coot! :);)

Cheers!

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

Yea Razor, I'ved been here before, I started a Juno F-20 thread, the only reason I got this plane is for the lack of building time due to school, I'm working on my BSIT, so time is limited. Been reading the F-20 vs Patriot thread from the start, I guess nobody got to wear the TUTU :D. This plane will be a budget build, just so it won't be intimidating to the newby prop jet flyer like me, I picked the SK-50 for its value, not for performance and the SA F-20 because it was $20 off , not to mention my addiction to model planes. I have been flying my Sig SE for the last 2 years and it's time to step it up, I would love to own a turbine jet, but that's waaaaayyyy out of budget [&o]. Anyway, I'm looking for pointers on the plane and setup. I was planning on keeping the rudder funtional as I doubt I'll go as fast to make it flutter.

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

Trust me..... speed.... it's like having too much horsepower in a sports car, it's never too much!

As far as the rudder, you can do whatever you'd like, but if I had my rudder I'd never use it other than for maybe a knife edge or two. Other than that the plane tracks smooth and like on rails.

I use a 10x6 apc and it works awesome. It gives me good speed but at the same time good vertical performance. I like doing the big jet like manuvers, so verticals a must. The TT pro 46 turns at 15,000rpm on the ground. So it's another 1000 or more in the air.

I want to try some real speed planes, the aerobatics are OK, but I need some excitement and a break in routine. I'm learning to fly helis as well, I have a Raptor 30, it will definately keep your mind and fingers working.

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

Joe- Welcome back then! Flyboy's F-20 was smoked by the patriot Jett-50 combo. He knows it and after a few brewskies he admits it... ;)

There is NOTHING wrong with the budget builds, I scrimp and trade and sell and buy used (engines mostly so it is a gamble) trying to have fun whilst I am POOR. The F-20 like the Patriot is going to be fast with virtually anything >46 up front. I have heard good things about the SK actually!

A 10x6 is a pretty good compromise if you want to get used to the speed thing gradually or if you want to do the routine like "Set" mentioned... Then go to 9x7 APC etc. etc. There IS a point "set" that you can get insane vertical even on a 9x9 if you use the right engine ;) All I do are big jet maneuvers, slow rolls and 4 point hesitation rolls with my Patriot- It will knife edge pretty easily if your into that...

Joe- I love the SIG SE, I flew them with a K&B-48 and Irvine-53 and they had SERIOUS power :D Great airplanes!

Keep us posted folks-

Thanks for the tips, I'll let you know how it flies with the SK once it's broken in.

All F-20s need a little speed at all times to fly! They are not for the 3D crowd. My SA flew great till I tried to turn too slow and too low.[&o]

setxws6 07-04-2006 03:23 AM

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

This is true vicman, they do need some speed and are obviously not a 3D plane.

However Joe, don't think that this plane won't fly well at slower speeds, because that is wrong. The plane stalls around 15-20 mph, and I've flown in a 10-15 mph wind and had the plane going into it and had it at a crawl. Vicman is right, don't turn when you are almost at stall speed because the nose will fall. However, if you stall the plane straight, the nose just falls nice and easy and is very perdictable.

I surprised many people at the flying field with just how slow I can get her with the nose into the wind. And then full throttle and back over a hundred in just a few seconds. Wonderful plane!

Thanks for the advise guys, its time for me to learn how to fly fast planes.

Setxws6, what spinner do you have on yours, looks nice and pointy.

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

If you want a pointy spinner, Precision Aerobatics make a spinner for an Ultimate Bipe that looks really good.

I think its the 2.25 inch that fits it.

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

My spinner is a Tru Turn ultimate 120 2.25 inch, similar to the precision aerobatics spinner. I'm sure they are equally as nice as the Tru Turns.

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

I did mean don't turn slow. High AOA landings are possible and impressive also it will fly high AOA in a straight line...again just don't turn till you got some steam.;)

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

Got the spinner from Juno RC, $10 plus shipping [X(], what a great deal.

RE: Got my Second Prop Jet

That's fishy! How can they sell an alumium spinner for $10 were others like TRU TURN sell them for 3x as much? Can it be trusted?

Nothing fishy about it my friend. You can trust it.
