What is the lightest, most powerful 2-stroke .46 glow engine I can buy?

I want to make my Kyosho GeeBee-Z go as fast as possible, and something tells me that there are engines out there that will propel it faster than an O.S. .46FX. I need an engine that is lighter than the O.S., but more powerful. Anyone have any recommendations? Rossi? Saito?

In a word, Jett.

PowerHouse!!

There is another Nelson!!

If money is part of the equation, I recomend a Thunder Tiger Pro-46. These little monsters will turn 17,000 rpm out of the box with a max tuned pipe and crank up around 15000 rpm with the stock muffler using a 10/6 prop. The Jet will do a little better, but I bet you can't buy it for $79.00 either.

You can't beat cubes.....

For maximum power from a 40/46 sized plane, you obviously want to fit the biggest engine you can get.....

I'd go for an Irvine .53

There may be other (cheaper) engines of this size that will fit into a 46 sized slot....

If you are using an OS 46 FX pipe it or at least get the Tower muffler. It will out run the TT 46 (but not by much). For the ultimate in lightweight go for the Webra speed 50 at 320 grams nothing comes close to it in light weight and it will turn a 10 x 7 prop with the Irvine. The Irvine however will out torque the Webra but you will pay a penalty in weight.

RCM's Clarence Lee review of the Irvine:
******************************
The Irvine 53 is the only 2-stroke engine in this displacement size we have reviewed. The closest to this displacement size would be the Fox 50, Enya 50CX, and Webra Speed 50, with the Webra Speed 50 being top dog. The Webra would turn the 10 x 6 300-400 rpm faster than the Irvine. With the normally used prop sizes, i.e., the 11 x 6 through 12 x 6, both engines turned almost identical rpm. When loaded down with the 13 x 6, the Irvine turned 500-600 rpm faster than the Webra, making it the new "King Of The Hill" when it comes to big prop turning ability in this engine size range. Naturally, the Irvine does have a small displacement advantage, which, incidentally, is actually .5203 cu. in., not quite .53.

Jet or Nelson

The Jett or the Nelson run around $300.00 give or take a little but are 2 1/2 times the BHP than any other engine in this class.
Also either one will turn the same props talked about at over 20,000 rpm all day long!!!

ChuckAuger 01-21-2003 12:46 AM

Yeah, but....

Would they really be the engine of choice for a Kyosho Gee Bee??

Considering this kind of engine for a GeeBee must truly be to bark up the wrong bush?

Why not get a turbine for it while your at it? ;)

Since nobody's mentioned the MVVS .49 yet, I think I will...I got one a couple of months ago, but haven't run it much, it looks to me tho that it's gonna be a good engine. Nice workmanship, (relitively)light, and can spin a prop big enough to clear that big cowl...

Like the man said, but remember NebulaDDS go fast turn left!!!

The West Eurotech 50v1. A hot-rodded version of the Webra
Speed 50-at a little more than half the cost of a Jett (lighter too)
it's hard to beat!

In the original post you said lighter than an OS, the Jetts and Nelsons aren't...

LawDog101 01-21-2003 09:56 PM

the problem is the cowl...

The problem with the GeeBee is that the cowl is so big, you really need an engine that can spin the prop, say an 11x6 fast enough. My thought is that most of the Jett and Nelson engines that I have seen spin 8's and 9's for speed. I bet your cowl is probably 6+ inches in diameter. My bet is on the Irvine. My .46 rev's like crazy and I have seen a .53 and it is a hoss.

Here is another thought. Why not go with a Rossi or Irvine .60. Spin a monster prop at make some serious thrust.

I think you people are getting out of hand. The Gee Bee is designed for a .40-.46 engine and any of the .46 size engines will make it move very smartly. Putting a .60 in it will probably cause it to be over weight and have to put weight in the tail. A friend of mine has one and is installing a Thunder Tiger .46 in it and I know it will fly very fast with this engine. I mean how fast do you want it to fly anyway? You are not going to race it anyhow, unless you are getting a couple guys together and go racing. Also remember added weight means faster landing speeds. Also the airframe is not built to handle a .60, so you might have it go to pieces in the air like the real one did. Just my thoughts

ChuckAuger 01-21-2003 11:23 PM

If it was mine...

I'd have a YS 63 in there and call it fast enough. This thing, while modeled after a '30's era pylon racer, isn't a pylon racer by todays definition. It is more of a Golden Age racer, and a hot four banger fits the bill nicely. And I bet you'd be surprised at how fast it would go with a YS 63 in it.

What about the Super Tigre 51, or K&B's screamin 47 are these engines any good? Does any one have any experience with either of these?

I have seen a couple of these Kyosho GeeBees and I do not think their is any hope at all and your wasting your money. One had a 46fx and it flew around like a slug. He then put a larger Rossi i it and was not much better. Front end is to bid. Props barely get past them

chipsta 01-26-2003 08:34 PM

engine

The Nova Rossi 50 make a FX 46 seem like a slow ride to grandma's. I just pulled a OS 46 FX off my Stick and installed a Nova Rossi 50. The Nova Rossi pulls the stick staight up faster than the FX did in level flight. I also had the Rossi 45 with the mini tuned pipe on this plane. It was much faster than the OS but not like the Nova is.

Kyosho Gee Bee Model Z

Why lighter than an OS .46? My Kyosho Gee Bee (and every other one I have seen) took approximately 20 oz in the nose to balance. I used an older Enya .80 four stroke, just the right weight and turns a larger prop, I typically use a 13x5 or 14x5. Seems to be plenty fast, but not blinding speed. Someone earlier said it, this plane has a huge cowl! Some engines that will develope monster RPM, the prop may be smaller diameter than the cowl. Good luck, the Gee Bee looks great in the air.

A Rossi .61, or an O.S. .61 FSR. :D
Stick the battery under the tank...move everything
forward, and use pull-pull's to save weight in the back.

Razor-RCU 01-27-2003 05:31 PM

Huh?

20 Oz. ???

Needs re-engineering then-

Scar 01-27-2003 06:09 PM

A 20 oz engine?

If I understood that correctly, he meant it required an engine that weighed 20 oz to balance correctly. Check out the Saito 100, I think it's real close to 20 oz. Spins a prop big enough to clear the cowl, too.

A .52 (four stroke) would probably fly it at close to the speed of the .46 FX version.

Good luck,
Dave Olson

id a test on a couple of tigre 51's. Use dthe same 10% fuel and a 10x6 master airscrew prop. Tried an abc and a ringed (yes they made both) and two style mufflers. I used the streamlined 9old style) and the one that looks like a tube and the ringed version on the new style tube muffler was the winner at 15,600 plu s or minus 100 yes they did make some good ones

Gee Bee Engine

I have the same ARF, and have heard of the Nose weight issue. To make things easy, I decided on a O.S. .91 FX two stroke. Take care of the weight, and prop issue. I can fly a large diameter prop, and keep the weight up front.

Just hope I don't rip the wings off. This is a Heck of a nice looking ARF.
