Ballistic pattern in SoCal !
 

Howdy revvers and Speed Folks!

I have decided to start a Southwestern District for the BPA (Ballistic Pattern Association) and I wanted to see if there was any interest in here since the Ballistic Pattern ships were pure SPEED back in the day. This is in it's infancy, but the guy who runs the BPA has offered to give us a little space on their web-site for our SoCal District!

Once we get that going I can try to find a local flying field who would be willing to host the event on their grounds- Anybody know anybody? Otherwise I will just be writing to local area clubs to see who will let us have a contest.

The event will likely be a ways off to make sure that we have enough interest and attendance but I wanted a gauge for interest in this area- Please let me know if you are interested in attending or flying at one of these events, and I will keep you posted!

I'm the local who would be interested, and I think that based on what I recall back in the day that the Sepulveda basin (Apollo XI) Field can still hold that type of contest without infringing on the 400' hight limit.

I have been doing a little more reseach on the BPA and the type of planes that are legal, and I think that I would like to get one going again.
I've currently been busy on a Exceleron 90, but that is built for today's turn around.

Since you brought this up, Does the BPA website have the old manuever listings or what schedule is being used for current BPA meets?

Well I can fly pattern as good as a bat flying backwards in the day time with his radar off and fangs retracted.
Ok I suck at pattern.
But, if there is a BBQ and break time to fly anything but pattern as fast as I can go I'm in!

If you got to the web-site it shows the patterns and rules, they appear to be the originals but I am not sure. I for one love the old school Pattern ships from that era. ;)

BTW- I have flown the Excelleron with a YS-1.10 and it was impressive! I currently have a 2x2 Eclipse/ YS-1.40 but my true passion lies with ships like EU1A, Atlanta, etc. with Hanno's, YS-61's and Rossi's :D:D

Wayne you are always invited my man! I am not a pattern flier typically so I bet you'd as good as me! Te idea is not flying well, it is about old-school FAST SCREAMIN' Pattern ships, and making friends-

Sounds very similar to SPA pattern. (senior pattern association)

SPA is older stuff, up to 1975. Which in my opinion excludes the best airframes- Atlanta, Aurora, EU1A

See below SPA rules:

1. Age Groups

NOVICE & SPORTSMAN -- All Ages
SENIOR EXPERT -- 0 - 60
SUPER SR. EXPERT -- 60 & Above

2. Aircraft

a: Any model designed and flown before January 1, 1976 is legal
b. Aircraft must be built to the plan form of the plans.
c. Retractable landing gear, flaps etc. are not legal.
d. The contestant is responsible to furnish documentation for any model not on the Legal Airplane List. The president can provide the member with Legal Airplane information.


3. Engines

a. Any side exhaust two cycle engine up to .61 cubic inches is legal
b. Four cycle engines up to .91 cubic inches with no air chamber or super charging or any kind are legal
c. A proper muffler must be used but tuned pipes are not legal d. Pumps may be used but no oversized carburetors can be used.

3. Radios a. Any radio currently approved by the AMA may be used.

With the BPA, Retracts and pipes are not only allowed but encouraged!

Is this bird naturally fast, or just average when you stick a good motor in it. Am trying to avoid the time to build another DC Tsunami (#5) which has been the overall best flyer ever encountered. Also very fast with just a decent engine and not retracted. ENJOY

I dunno. It looks like a fast pattern ship to me. Stick a good 2-stroke engine in it and I imagine it would be very similar to what they were 'back in the day'. The July 2007 issue of Model Aviation has an article on vintage pattern and has a pretty lengthy write-up of this model. The original Intruder won the 1970 Nats.

I have just finished a contest here in Miami for SPA will not be counted as points because i have a EUA1 plane
I think it will be very hard to have a BPA association since they split before 1975 SPA and after 1975 BPA
Do you have any idea were to compete in BPA or information to create one here in South Florida
