Scat Cats !!

How many of ya'll still fly a Scat Cat? I've been flying for 13 years and have always had one. The yellow one runs a 12 year old Jett 46 and clocked it at 156 mph. ! The white one is shrunk 20% smaller and runs a K&B 21. Clocked it at 128 mph. These planes fly great at any speed, fast or slow! I will always have one. Paul

I still fly this one......
Now retired from racing, and renamed by my daughter "Battle Cow" I use it for just sport flying and also for occational combat (streamer chases) at our club's annual airshow. Has had Jett 428, Nelson 428, CAPS, SEMPRA and TT40 engines up front at one time or another. Currently powered by an old ST29 engine. Does not look this good anymore :) Been battled quite a bit. But it still flys. :) |

Here's one I scratch built off some plans with a thiner wing, retracts and a Y.S 45 8.75x8 on 40% turning 18k flew awesome untill the wing broke at the retract

I had two sonic 500's they are about one of the most fun planes I have ever flown. They are pretty fast, cheap, simple, and handle sport flying 10X better then Q500's. They should bring them back as fast sport planes, only include an engine cowling to up the looks a little.

Love flying Mine. I run a 25FX 9x5 jett tuned muffler. Great combo very stable maybe not the fastest But I never cut a turn and I can fly a very tight course. I usally beat 40 size planes. You could teach someone to fly with these planes! The landing always blows me away when it just keeps gliding. By far one of the greatest planes made. Does anyone still make them???

Lone Star started making them again for a while. Then they had the fire. So I am not sure if they are back in production.
The Scat Cat is a very basic and classic design that dates back to the early 1980s, and was sorta the standard of performance when we raced with K&B .40 engines around then. The ScatCat design sorta found its limitations when engines moved beyond the Rossi and Webra .40 in the 1990s. Word of caution for "original" scat cat builders - the front wing attach dowels are the weak link. Especially if you are sport flying and pull any sort of outside loop or negative G manuver. I converted all of mine to 4-bolts following the time in 1983 when I found that out :) Also, my later scat cats did away with the wood spar/gear block - went with a small blade spar and a few layers of 2oz glass on the center section (as seen on similar designs). The China Clipper and Sonic 500 were similar designs, but not 100% faithful in constuction. I also recall that the wing airfoils were slightly different, but not something most will notice. If you like the low-wing Q-500 layouts, look around for plans for the Viper (the original Doug Whittaker design, not the ARF you see today) - scrach built, and you can usually find wingcores from the commercial foam wing companies. It was a step-beyond the scat cat in performance and construction, and had all of the same great flying qualities. Could be built conventional tail (my preference) or V-tail. Matney Models PitBull kit is glass fuselage, foam wing - same basic layout, and quick - only about $100 for the kit . Also worth noting, Matney has the wood/foam/glass DawgGoneIt available now too. Nice plane, very quick, V-tail. Foam wing and stab. Costs about $115 with shipping (photo) - not on the website yet (should be shortly), but you can order one by calling |

[&:] (tissue and dope was my prefered method for Q-500 wood planes - relatively cheap, easy, and very very light - This plane in racing setup needed 1/2oz of ballast even with the 500mah battery to make the 3.5 weight) |

I had one in the early 90's with an OS 40FSR that I practiced on. It was a good pylon trainer with that motor. I think the scooter II was a better pylon trainer and sport model though. Mine had a piped K&B 6.5 - stupid fast but would slow way down well.

Believe it or not, this was my 2nd plane, and the 1st one I built from a kit. Got a lot of help, but did most of it myself.
Scat Cat with chopped nose, and OS .25FX, great flying plane, but couldn't keep up with the doddgers of the time. And, its not green, imagine that. Plane was lost around 2001 when I tied a streamer to it, put an OS .46fx on the nose, and did some open combat. Spectacular midair. |

Would any of you guys still have a set of plans laying around of the scatcat, had a couple of these planes back in the early nineties and loved them , we flew them as sport planes with .40s and added rudders, great fliers. Drop me a line if you would..will pay for the plans and shipping.

Be carefull with flutter with those full span ailerons. Those were an issue, and most people fixed the last 6" or so which seemed to solve the problem.
