OS .35AX
Now that it has been out for quite some time, has anybody run the new .35 AX? I have read and heard (although they may or may not be reliable sources) that it is not only slightly larger, but also a little heavier than the .32SX it replaces and designed to turn a larger prop at a lower RPM. I'm wondering if any of you have had a chance to record any numbers on it yet or compare it in flight on a plane that used to have a .32 on it.
Just curious. |
RE: OS .35AX
with a little work on it and a jett pipe it turns a APC 8x7 at 20,500
|
RE: OS .35AX
Really? Wow.
What constitutes "a little work"? |
RE: OS .35AX
raise the exhaust port timing up just a little. work the crank where mixture enters from carb so has better transition. clean up transfers on the inside. slowly raise and widen exhaust till no gain is seen.

RE: OS .35AX
Do you have any numbers on the way it ran straight out of the box?
My apologies for so many questions, but I've thus far been unable to uncover any performance data on this engine running with anything other than huge 3D props. I love the way the .32SX runs and was disappointed when they dropped it for an AX version but I'm pleased to hear that even if it takes "a little work" it is capable of turning a respectable RPM. |
RE: OS .35AX
In its stock untouched form i think it was just average. the same as most out there. I would just throw the jett muffler on it and prop it for 17,500-18,000 and youll be happy with it. what plane you putting it in.

RE: OS .35AX
Don't have one yet. ( .35AX or the plane for it)
I was asking because I really liked the .32 and was hoping the .35AX was similar but I couldn't find any legitimate info on it. I have had several projects in mind but didn't want to build a plane for a flop of an engine. Thank you for the information. |
RE: OS .35AX
From everything I've read the .35 is nowhere near the .32 for us revers... But that said I have yet to see one show up with a pipe and small prop. That alone tells me something.

RE: OS .35AX
I talked with Mac Hodges about this engine and he says what most here have said. This is ported for torque not max rpm. David Grantham runs them on his NCFFA planes and he loves them but these planes are not built for speed. David is the reigningl NCFFA champion.

RE: OS .35AX
I have been running my 35AX on a GP Combat Spitfire for several weeks now. It is currently stock. but I live in Houston, and Jett Engineering is just down the road (Muahahaha!). I haven't tached it yet, but I can keep up with my buddy's GP P-40 with a OS 32SX and MACs pipe. the 8x7 APC is absolutely the best prop. I am currently fiberglassing my Spitfire, and I will run it with the stock setup, and then the Jett muffler.
Overall, I have been very happy with the stock setup, but of course I need more speed! Report back soon. |
RE: OS .35AX
If the .35 can't turn a 8x8 at 18,000 on 15% nitro with a tuned pipe......it isn't as good as the .32 was.
If you have access to a milling machine, plus don't mind taking the risk of the liner peeling to bring the .35 up to speed engine standards, then this engine sounds like a great deal. ;) |
RE: OS .35AX
ORIGINAL: airraptor raise the exhaust port timing up just a little. work the crank where mixture enters from carb so has better transition. clean up transfers on the inside. slowly raise and widen exhaust till no gain is seen. How do I do this?!? Please school me. The Jett muffler definitely added some RPM. I am getting just under 18k static right now. |
RE: OS .35AX
With what prop? 18k isn't bad if it's a good speed prop.
|
RE: OS .35AX
APC 8x7
|
RE: OS .35AX
The 8x7 at 18,000 gives you 119 mph which isn't too bad.
How well does a Jett .35 turn a 8x7 or 8x8? |
RE: OS .35AX
I have just put to gether an extreem flight outlaw with an os35ax with stock mufler and 9*8 apc prop on 15% fuel, I think it would pull 16500rpm.
|
RE: OS .35AX
I'm sure that's a good running and fun combo, but I won't be sold on it till I find how much the new .35 compares to the ole .32 with a tuned pipe and a 8x8 prop.

RE: OS .35AX
Accidentally ran into this old thread and am wondering on how long the 35AX lasts when running at some of these extremely high revs. I had several of the old 28FSRs and they loved to run fast. Thinking of trying this with my 35AX but I just don't think the engine is designed for it.

RE: OS .35AX
I've got a 35AX on a mini quickee that I have designed. Just something to play with.
The 35 runs great at idle and wide open, but loads up in the midrange. I have a Nelson muffler on it, and it pulls a 8.75X9W pylon prop great. Anyone know how to clean up the midrange? |
RE: OS .35AX
CP my Jett 35 will spin a APC 8x7 at 21,500.
All of the OS AX carbs have the low speed needle come out of the carb body at a low rpm usally around the 4000-5000 range. I think its a really poor design. I have taken mine and put a small dab of solder and tapered it just a bit to help get into ahigh rpm range where it isnt as critical. Most of the AX engines with stock muffler can be "tuned out" by playing with the low speed and high speed needles. The Mid range gets worse with the addition for the jett pipes but the trade of is the 1000 more rpm. EARl your prop is loading down the engine a bit more than should with that prop. those props really dont work well below 18,500-19,000 rpm. With your stock 35 and the nelson Muffler should look at the APC 8x7 or 8x8. |

As was noted, that 9W only works well when spinning over 18,000 and when you get airspeeds up over 150mph. The muffler is key. You have to let the engine turn in the proper rpm band. You should be looking for 17,500 or better. APC 8.5x7.5 would be my choice. |
RE: OS .35AX
Why are you just screwing around to get performance. See what a Jett or Nelson pipe costs, add same to the OS 35 costs and you are close to th best, a Jett 35 and something around 21,500 with all the benefits of the Jett. Runs foreaver, mines 10 or more years old and still on top of the game, great transiton. Yes, I won't go unless I can take it with me, period. Yes, am very pro Jett engines, they are a bargin considering the years of performance. Never wore one out. ENJOY

RE: OS .35AX
I have a thunder tiger .36 whic will do over 18,000 with an 8-8 with a Jett muffler. I think it might be a better choice
